I've been whale watching several times in Hawaii and a handful of times in New England. Whale Watching with Outer Island Expeditions in the San Juans was by far the best experience I've had to date. I had the pleasure of touring with Captain Beau, who I understand is the proprietor of the business, and is extremely knowledgeable about the area and the wildlife therein. He actually knew several of the Orcas by name and used his insight into the animals' behavior to position the boat for optimal viewing. The boat ride was surprisingly stable, while we whisked through the water at about 30 or 40 knots. The quick transit allowed for a significant amount of time with the Orcas, and the opportunity to do some offshore viewing of some of the land-based wildlife on a few of the nearby islands. The small group size on the boat made for a very comfortable trip, with the opportunity to talk face to face with Beau about the surrounding wildlife rather than simply listen to a naturalist drone on over a loud speaker. I'm looking forward to booking another trip with Outer Island the next time I'm in the San Juans... I'm thinking about a fishing trip next time around assuming I can convince the wife to go along with such a plan.

Our three-hour whale-watching trip was unforgettable. Captain Damien took us right to where two pods of orca were feeding. He seemed to have a knack for anticipating where they would be next, and he made sure we always had a clear view while keeping a respectful distance from the animals. Other boats nearby were crowded with people (in strange orange suits) being bellowed at by loudspeakers. We were so glad to have such a friendly, personal experience instead. We were impressed with the professionalism of everyone at Outer Island Expeditions, from the office staff to the captain and crew. The boat left right on schedule (unlike some other boat tours we've taken). Everyone seemed to be working hard to make sure we had an amazing experience--and we did.

We spent two days with the Outer Island company and had a great time. The first day was a whale watch. We were late getting out only because they had to take the earlier group farther out to see whales and the waves got stronger which took them longer to get in. Even though we were later getting out, they did not cut our trip short. They were dedicated to getting each group a good experience. Great whale watching trip to see Orcas all over the place. You could also do an evening dinner on an island that they cooked while you explored. Salmon or steak and then they pulled up crab pots on the way to dinner and we had fresh crab!! Great food and a very enjoyable evening. The next day was a fishing trip. Again, we threw out crab pots and picked them up on the way in. Limited out with Dungeness Crab. Really fun pulling up the pots and seeing the crab! We had to work a little to find fish but then had a very good fishing trip. Several species and a lot of fun. Whale watching and fishing can be problematic because of many factors. The constant was the great service provided by Outer Island. Very accommodating, professional, and a great time overall. We did not stay in their resort but would definitely do so next. A great view of the ocean and the accommodations looked very nice. Try it out.
