You never really know what you are going to end up with when you go out fishing - that said when you have a well experienced and prepared captain - you are more likely to have a shot at some nice fish. We were in Ketchican for the day off the Coral Princess and wanted to try Salmon fishing. Now we fish all the time in FL and my husband did the research here and found Captain Mike. He picked us up right at the cruise ship dock - which was great since we only had 4 hours and our ship was leaving 15 minutes after our scheduled return. Now I jam just happy to be on the water with a chance of catching a good fish so my expectations were well exceeded with captian Mike. We only had to go about 20 minutes to the fishing spot - it was a nice ride, a new boat and beautiful scenery on the way. Captian Mike was all set with bait and tackle and within minutes we were trolling. We also lucked out in it being 80 plus degrees so we were not bundled up and could enjoy the temps on the water. We saw seals and bald eagles AND caught Salmon! Now that is the way to spend the last 4 hours in Ketchikan if you ask me - Captain Mike also was all set to have out fish shipped back for. Us - so we will be able to share our catch in photos and on the table with family and friends! Can't say enough. Good things about The Alaskan Catch - I am hoping to get to fish with Captain Mike again and catch my first Halibut next time to match my first King Salmon!

We were lucky to book a trip with Captain Mike for a morning trip during a short cruise ship stop. Really, the trip could not have been better. We were met at the bottom of the gangplank just as arranged. After a short walk on the dock to his boat, we were given a safety briefing and we were on our way out to out to our spot. We chose bottom fishing and we motored to a pinnacle rising out of 1000 ft water to a plateau just over 300 ft. Before Mike could even drop the anchor (I know, a 300+ ft anchor drop!), three orcas appeared off the bow and swam within 100 ft of the boat. We were destined to have a good day. Everything about the operation is top notch. The boat is less than 2 years old and well equipped with electronics. The fishing gear was in perfect working condition and included nice Penn reels loaded with quality braided line. Our bait was a special cure that put the halibut on the chew. Think about other fishing charters you've paid good money for and you end up on a filthy bathtub using corroded gear, reels half-filled with nicked up monofilament, and bait you know the guy picked up at 7-11 on his way down to the dock. We were immediately into the fish catching several legal 'buts. Our original plan was to release everything and Mike had no problem with this. I've been on boats where the philosophy is get the people limited out and back to the dock ASAP. The plan changed a bit and we ended up taking a limit of fish, along with releasing several legal fish. I really appreciated Mike's careful treatment of fish prior to the release. I've definitely seen the other end of the spectrum relative ethical treatment of fish once they are board prior to release. This should speak volumes about the kind of guy Captain Mike is. Besides the killer whales, our bonus species were a pacific cod, a couple of ratfish, and a my wife foul-hooked a large skate that we were pretty sure was Mr. Barn door! At the end of the trip, Captain Mike dropped us off right at the ship and transported our fish to the processor for packaging and shipping. You can see in the attached photo where he dropped us off......that is him pulling away from the dock. Overall, we had a great day and I agree with all of the other positive reviews here. I'm looking forward to heading back up to Ketchikan some day and taking another trip with Alaska Catch and maybe combine the fishing with a stay in their cabin.

We had a great time with Capt. Mike. Here's how our trip went: I made an inquiry on the website. He called me back and we talked for 30+ min about what I was looking for. I have 4 boys and they wanted to salmon fish. Mike also suggested we could drop some crab pots and do our own mini version of Deadliest Catch. The kids were real excited about this trip. He met us at the pier when our cruise ship docked, walked us to his boat, got the adults their fishing licenses and went over all the safety protocols. Soon we were on our way. We dropped the crab pots and headed for the salmon grounds. We spent the next ~3.5 hours salmon fishing and landed 11 pink and silver salmon. No kings on this trip but the kids didn't care as they had a great time reading in 24-28" fish. Mike was great baiting hooks and keeping us on the fish. As we headed in to check the crab pots he said he didn't know how much luck we'd have with a short soak but as the boys hauled the pots up, we had over 25 crab in the 2 pots. He showed the boys how to hold them and how to measure them so we only kept the ones of legal size/sex. Since we were on a cruise and we couldn't keep any, we gave Mike a few for dinner and he even made sure all the correct documentation was in place for the transfer of those. We took our fish in to the processor and he had us back to port in time for us to get pack on to the ship. All in all this was a great trip and I'm really glad I booked this on my own and didn't go through the cruise line.
