I was hoping to learn about my camera and photography as the information that I had promised - 'you don't have to know anything about your camera'. I bought my camera just for this cruise to Alaska. I was hoping to learn the proper settings of my camera for a particular shot. Luckily I went to Youtube about a week before this excursion to get some idea going in. I'm not sure how an individual gets proper instruction when there are several people on the excursion and the instructor doesn't have time to deal with folks one on one. I wrote to Joe about my experience with Dana and the information I did not receive about my camera. I gave my input on how to improve things, so now I'm leaving the review. If you're looking to learn more about your camera and proper settings for a particular shot, then this is not what you're looking for. At least that was my experience with Dana. You'd be better served by referencing Youtube. This review is based on the fact that we were told we would learn about our cameras, but did not receive that instruction.

Thanks for your comments. We take all comments seriously and are always looking for ways to improve. I appreciate the opportunity to respond. The guide on this tour, Dana Sohm, has received numerous five-star reviews for his photography tours this summer. So I was a bit surprised by your comments and asked Dana to respond. Dana told me that on this day the tour went to Dyea; he explained that because of the salmon run on the Taiya river he thought there would be opportunities to photograph bald eagles. Dana’s comments follow in quotes. “I usually start right off explaining how to spot eagles (golf balls trees or on stumps of driftwood). I usually suggest that my guests get out their longest telephoto lenses and hold them on their laps to be ready because eagle sightings can be fleeting. I usually relate how to photography flying eagles and how my early attempts were blurry due to choosing too slow a shutter speed. So I recommend setting cameras to shutter priority with a shutter speed of 1/2,000 sec. I recommend auto ISO so photos don't come out too dark. I also recommend hand-holding (no tripod) and mention my early mistake of trying to get my tripod out of the trunk only to find the eagle had already flown. I usually summarize these settings one more time, i.e., longest lens, shutter priority, 1/2000 sec, auto ISO, camera on lap ready to go. I've usually finished these instructions by the time we exit long bay and enter the Tayia River estuary where I tell guests that this is where eagles are usually found. When we spot an eagle, we pull over at the earliest safe place, and everyone, usually with great excitement, does their best to get eagle photos. I try to take a look at guests' photos and encourage them to share with each other. Eagle photography doesn't really lend itself to more specific discussion about settings. I have already suggested a shutter and ISO setting, The camera chooses a corresponding aperture, which is usually wide-open, which is appropriate for the subject.” I would also like for anyone reading this review to know that your review lists the tour as “Private Photography tour to Haines-Skagway departure.” That is not the tour that you participated in. You participated in our Skagway photography tour sold onboard a variety of cruise lines. This is a group tour (11 guests max). While we only run small group photography tours in both Haines and Skagway, there is a qualitative difference in the amount of personalized attention you get on a private tour vs. a group tour. The private tour is more expensive. I am sorry that you feel that you did not learn about your camera on this tour.

Rachel, our tour guide, made this tour memorable. Great photography tips and overview of the basics. She was friendly and attended to everyone needs.. We went off the usual tourist areas and I appreciated that. I would recommend that tour to everyone even if you are not a photographer!

We spent half the day with Dana and he was a very friendly and knowledgeable tour guide and professional photographer. The pictures I got from this part of my trip ended up being the best shots I took. Thanks for the tips and excellent tour Dana!
