The Harding spills out in all directions in the form of glaciers. Some stretch northwest into rugged hills of the Kenai Peninsula. Others—five of them, to be exact—reach as far as the sea along the craggy coast of the Gulf of Alaska.

As a travel agent and former resident of AK, I was really excited to learn this was operated by Kenai Fjords, a company known for these tours. Unfortunately, our experience was one of disappointment. It started with a rude check-in person who, after running through the names of my party quickly informed me that she was missing a name. When I asked her to repeat, she rolled her eyes and rudely asked me Weren't you listening?. We were assigned to the Kenai Explorer and got to the dock early to get a good viewing position on the boat. We got a great spot and my kids were having a wonderful time and totally engaged. We stopped at Fox Island for lunch and skipping stones great rocks for skipping! but as lunch was ending we were asked to quickly proceed to the dock for a passenger count. Our boat was apparently experiencing engine trouble and we were asked to immediately collect our belongings from the Explorer and move them to a smaller boat that had arrived earlier to Fox Island. As you might imagine, the good viewing spots were already taken and my party of seven was split in different spots in the boat. Worst of all, my kids engagement dissipated as they had to jockey for position with overzealous adults. Being in the travel business for 20 years I get that issues happen but my suspicion that this was a cost-reduction exercise by consolidating two less-than-full boats was confirmed when I overhead a crew member on the new boat say we haven't gotten in trouble for this yet but passengers are getting mad. And it wasn't just my party that was inconvenienced, those on the boat prior to our arrival went from positive to several wondering whether these interlopers were going to make them late for their train back to Anchorage. Sorry KFT, yield management means managing your available seats and passenger counts PRIOR to the voyage NOT mid-trip at your customer's expense. You took a great experience and tanked it chasing a few extra .
