I want to be scrupulously fair in this review, so first here are some of the many positives about taking a segway nature tour with Doo's Amazing Tours: the reservation process is easy; Louisa (nicknamed Doo) was set up and ready for us even though we arrived early; access to parking near the starting point was simple; Louisa supplied water for everyone, and even an extra jacket for one rider who was cold; the practice area is private and spacious; the tour route is well set up and there are interesting things to see; Louisa is good at providing commentary while keeping the riders safe.
Our group of four ran into trouble when we arrived for orientation and needed to sign the liability waiver. We know that these are common at all attractions involving physical risk, but as we read it over it included a statement from each of us certifying that we had viewed a safety video. Since we had not been asked to view such a video before arrival, we couldn't sign the waiver as written, so we asked about either viewing the video or crossing out the certification statement. Louisa stated that we could not alter the waiver in any way, and then gave us an iPad on which to view the thirteen minute video. The video appears to be from the company that manufactures the segways, and is chock full of warnings and illustrations of the disasters that can happen if you make a mistake riding the segway. The video really made me feel panicky, but as soon as it concluded it was time for our orientation. When I got up on the segway, all I could see in my imagination were all those illustrations of crumpled and broken people who rode the segway incorrectly. I was slow to get a feel for the segway and asked Louisa to give me more guidance, and to go on holding onto the segway until I felt more secure. She then used the same words comparing forward and backward movement ("gas" and "brake") several times (I would have done better if she varied the way she explained it), and when I wasn't making progress quickly enough she immediately began discussing giving me a refund so that we could stop my training because I wasn't showing that I could ride safely. Louisa seemed pretty detached and uncaring about how things were going, so I dismounted and the other three in our group completed the orientation. Louisa gave me another chance to try, and rather than reassuring me about my fear, seemed to confirm her belief that I couldn't do it. What I needed was some verbal reassurance and patience, but she didn't give it, and the other members of our group could not dismount to come and talk to me. I suspect that if I had had enough time to learn at my pace and get over my nerves I would have done fine. In the end, the other three passed the training and went on the tour. Ironic, because the segway tour was from MY bucket list - I was the one who suggested and booked the tour and the others were "along for the ride"!
The moral of this story is that you can have a great time on this tour IF you can master the segway quickly enough (and I am told that most people do). However, if you are like me and are likely to be timid at first, consider a different tour, or try to get some segway experience first from a friend or neighbor who will let you learn at your own speed. Finally, the refund process worked quickly, so I got back the cost of my tour and can apply it to another attempt in the future.
One other thing to be aware of - the waiver requires you to sign away all privacy rights to your image and voice during the tour, so any photos or videos can be used for promotional purposes or for anything at all (and since the waiver can't be altered, you have to sign on to this or not go on the tour). Doo's Amazing Tours is a responsible business providing a fun adventure for lots of people - just think about whether it is a good fit for the people in your particular group.
