Took the 1:30 whale watch excursion the last week of December. The crew was friendly, professional, knowledgeable and truly seems to enjoy what they do. We encountered a huge pod of dolphins (1000+) which we enjoyed as they swam along with the boat. On the way back to the harbor we saw a young grey whale. We slowed to watch him for nearly 20 min. It does get cool and windy on the ride so be prepared with jacket and hood/hat. Also the crew does have blankets to borrow which was nice. Look for Groupons that will give you great discount on tickets and highly recommend you make reservations on the San Diego Whale Watch website. As far as kids on the excursion- my 9-year old initially stayed bundled under a blanket during the ride out but after we started seeing dolphins he (and friend he made on the boat) stayed engaged the rest of the 3.5 hour trip. Highly recommend this outfit.

Super friendly and well-informed crew; very good value. We saw several dolphins swimming next to the boat, and three whales (of two different species). Expect a temperature drop of at least 10 degrees from the land temp - you'll want to wear a coat and long pants. Also, I read several reviews about people getting motion sickness, so we took Dramamine ahead of time. However, no one on our tour got sick, and I thought the trip was pretty smooth. Highly recommended - fun for everyone. :)

My husband took me whale watching today with a reservation at 1:30pm. We had a very nice time and got to see a few gray whales and some fin whales. bring a jacket and wear layers. No whales breaching and no dolphins this time, but that's no biggie. Do make reservations for this 3 hour tour. Also mention Yelp for a $22 discount. You can bring food and drinks of your own but some sandwiches and snacks can be purchased on board.
