My husband, my 83 year old mother and I took a three hour tour aboard the Privateer. The crew were fun and professional. They make every effort to make sure you get to see as many marine mammals as possible. My mom who has always wanted to see a whale out in the wild was certain we wouldn't see any. She was wrong! We saw seven blue whales. Three of them decided to come play around our boat as we idled for an hour!! They came right up to the edge and would turn and look at us. An elephant seal decided to pop up out of the ocean and watch us for awhile. My mother was so thrilled and I am glad she was wrong. Of course there are no guarantees as to what you will get to see on your tour, but watching their site on Facebook, they seem to be more than lucky, they are very knowledgeable about the habits of these creatures.

Contrary to what many people say whale watching is not just during the winter migration. We went at the beginning of September and witnessed 7 different blue whales. We saw them on separate occasions during our trip making a total of about 20 sightings. There was also a huge pod of dolphins that followed the boat around and chased in front of it. All the crew were really friendly and I think the food and drink on board were acceptably priced. The crew did tell us we were lucky to see so many, although dolphins were almost guaranteed. I guess I wouldn't have rated it so high if we hadn't seen any whales, which could have easily happened.

Who would have thought that just 6 miles off-shore , such amazing creatures were taking advantage of the food just off our coast. We saw at least a dozen blue whales feeding in a small area. They were not afraid of us, and at one point we were covered in whale breath. It was so exciting, first sighting the spouts and then getting close enough to see these huge creatures arch and dive down to feed again. We were even treated to some whale flukes. The naturalist was very well informed and the captain kept us entertained with Jimmy Buffet songs. On the way in, we watched a pod of dolphins play in our wake. A spectacular way to spend an afternoon.
