Alaska Sled Dogs & Musher's Camp
Your journey begins with an entertaining historic tour from your knowledgeable guide through downtown Skagway and along nine miles of stunning coastline to our Musher’s Camp™ in Dyea. Next, hop into our specialized unimog for an exciting ride up our rugged mountain road, surrounded by glacially fed streams and waterfalls. At the top, your musher will greet you with a custom-designed wheeled summertime sled and a team of very excited Alaskan Huskies! Feel the power of these strong dogs as they whisk you down a mile-long, zig-zagging trail deep in the Tongass National Rainforest! After meeting your dog team, climb back into your unimog and enjoy the adventurous ride to a breathtaking overlook of the Dyea tidal flats. Depending on the month you just might see eagles, bears, seals, horseback riders, wild flowers, and of course snow-capped mountains. Your unimog will then bring you to what we like to call a “Kennel Talk.” We have been sharing our passion for dog sledding for years, and in that time we have gathered up the most frequently ask questions about the sport. In the Kennel Talk, we will share the fascinating answers and welcome any additional questions you may have. Of course, we make sure you have plenty of time to play with our puppies! Your affections actually socialize these future athletes, which is essential to their racing success. A crackling fire and a unique gift shop round out your visit. All of this in a spectacular Alaskan setting!

We came into Skagway on the Norwegian Bliss on 7/3/19. I had heard positive reviews about Musher's excursions but my experience in Skagway was pretty poor. We traveled a distance to the camp and the views were great (like most of Alaska). When we got to the base camp, we had to take another transport. It was a bumpy ride up, up, up and I was anticipating the climb was so the dogs would have an easier time pulling people and sleds downhill. However, the actual sled pull was just a little loop with no hills in which the dogs stop 2 to 3 times. All in all, I would estimate that the length of this loop was probably the size of a football field or smaller. If the dogs didn't keep stopping, we would have done the loop in 5 minutes. After descending back to base camp, we listened to a talk about sleds and then got to hold some puppies. Kids like that part but really, we could have gotten that elsewhere. There were people taking pictures of us from the start and they were all for sale after we held the puppies. This excursion left me flat as it could have been done in my own backyard. I was expecting a downhill pull in the mountainous Alaskan wilds but really, it was a quick loop and then a pitch to buy photos and/or buy merchandise from the base camp store.

This excursion was awesome! Chad and Michael were so much fun and very informative. All the guides who work at the Skagway Musher's Camp and the dogs were fabulous. I would highly recommend!

This was an excursion for us off the Carnival Legend. My younger daughters absolutely loved it but the adults enjoyed it too. You get pulled by the dogs, get to hold and play with puppies but you also get some background and information about the sport of sled dog racing. Really enjoyable and a great half day adventure leaving plenty of time to wander the town afterwards. This is a great company with good employees.
