Alaska Sled Dogs & Musher's Camp
Your journey begins with an entertaining historic tour from your knowledgeable guide through downtown Skagway and along nine miles of stunning coastline to our Musher’s Camp™ in Dyea. Next, hop into our specialized unimog for an exciting ride up our rugged mountain road, surrounded by glacially fed streams and waterfalls. At the top, your musher will greet you with a custom-designed wheeled summertime sled and a team of very excited Alaskan Huskies! Feel the power of these strong dogs as they whisk you down a mile-long, zig-zagging trail deep in the Tongass National Rainforest! After meeting your dog team, climb back into your unimog and enjoy the adventurous ride to a breathtaking overlook of the Dyea tidal flats. Depending on the month you just might see eagles, bears, seals, horseback riders, wild flowers, and of course snow-capped mountains. Your unimog will then bring you to what we like to call a “Kennel Talk.” We have been sharing our passion for dog sledding for years, and in that time we have gathered up the most frequently ask questions about the sport. In the Kennel Talk, we will share the fascinating answers and welcome any additional questions you may have. Of course, we make sure you have plenty of time to play with our puppies! Your affections actually socialize these future athletes, which is essential to their racing success. A crackling fire and a unique gift shop round out your visit. All of this in a spectacular Alaskan setting!

Kevin was a great tour guide. So funny and very knowledgeable about the area. The puppies that we held were adorable. My daughter(15) loved it. It was the only excursion that she didn’t sleep through.

We had a great guide - Kevin. He was funny and very informative. At the Musher's camp we listened to an interesting talk by Ryan Redington whose grandfather started the Iditarod. He explained a lot about the race and how it affects both Mushers and dogs. And then we got to hold PUPPIES!

Don't let the mushers' camp's sense of humor fool you - these are serious athletes in training for their races! You learn all about what traits in the dogs are desirable for racing dogs, what and how much they eat (and eat, and eat!), and how they're trained. We also learned how much these dogs love what they do - so much so that even after they retire, some go to live with "recreational mushers" who have the dogs give kids sled rides in the winter just so the dogs can keep doing what they love, but not have to do it for a living anymore. You learn about the Iditarod - the human side as well as the canine side. And you get to cuddle and play with sled dog puppies - some of the ones we got to hold didn't even have their eyes open yet. My son just about melted at the overwhelming cuteness. This was a great shore excursion and I'm so glad we did it!
