Alaska Sled Dogs & Musher's Camp
Your journey begins with an entertaining historic tour from your knowledgeable guide through downtown Skagway and along nine miles of stunning coastline to our Musher’s Camp™ in Dyea. Next, hop into our specialized unimog for an exciting ride up our rugged mountain road, surrounded by glacially fed streams and waterfalls. At the top, your musher will greet you with a custom-designed wheeled summertime sled and a team of very excited Alaskan Huskies! Feel the power of these strong dogs as they whisk you down a mile-long, zig-zagging trail deep in the Tongass National Rainforest! After meeting your dog team, climb back into your unimog and enjoy the adventurous ride to a breathtaking overlook of the Dyea tidal flats. Depending on the month you just might see eagles, bears, seals, horseback riders, wild flowers, and of course snow-capped mountains. Your unimog will then bring you to what we like to call a “Kennel Talk.” We have been sharing our passion for dog sledding for years, and in that time we have gathered up the most frequently ask questions about the sport. In the Kennel Talk, we will share the fascinating answers and welcome any additional questions you may have. Of course, we make sure you have plenty of time to play with our puppies! Your affections actually socialize these future athletes, which is essential to their racing success. A crackling fire and a unique gift shop round out your visit. All of this in a spectacular Alaskan setting!

Okay, this was seriously one of the best tours I’ve ever done EVER, and it was hands down the best excursion we booked out of Princess Cruises to Alaska. Kevin, the guide that picked us up from the port and drove us to the location (and stayed with our group pretty much the whole time) was the coolest guy ever. He had an unapologetic sense of humor and kept everyone laughing the whole ride. The Musher’s Camp Experience itself was absolutely amazing, and our musher was very friendly and answered every question anyone in our mini-group (6 people per sled) had. The dogs were very well behaved and well cared for, and we learned that the excursion kind of acts as summer training for the dogs, so they can stay in shape for the winter. And the puppies. Oh, the puppies. Those things were so cute, and by playing with them and handling them, we were actually helping to socialize them before their sled-pulling training starts. This excursion was a truly amazing experience, and I cannot stress the quality of the place and the people enough.

We were picked up at our cruise port. On the way through town our driver/guide pointed out the sites of Skagway and talked a little bit about the town's history. Once we got to the dog sleds via bus and unimog, we were assigned a sled and musher who have us the lowdown on the dogs and what we could expect. The dogs were SO excited once they knew they were about to get to run. They were obviously well cared for. Many of them were Iditarod participants, identified by a red tag on their collar. After the ride we had a 10 minute Q&A on the Iditarod race and the dogs, then we got to hold some of the puppies. Clearly the dogs were well taken care of and those that aged out after 8 years were adopted out. Tim dropped us off at the edge of downtown and we walked back to town. Great trip.

We went as an excursion from our cruise. Thomas was our guide and very entertaining and friendly. The sled ride was great and the musher was incredibly knowledgeable. Even though it wasn't on snow, you did get to have the feeling of being pulled by a well trained group of dogs. It was interesting to hear all about the dogs and facts about the race. My kids loved getting to hold the puppies and pups. The drive up and back to Skagway was also filled with information about the area. You could tell Thomas loved talking about nature and Alaska. It was well worth the time and money.
