Alaska Sled Dogs & Musher's Camp
Your journey begins with an entertaining historic tour from your knowledgeable guide through downtown Skagway and along nine miles of stunning coastline to our Musher’s Camp™ in Dyea. Next, hop into our specialized unimog for an exciting ride up our rugged mountain road, surrounded by glacially fed streams and waterfalls. At the top, your musher will greet you with a custom-designed wheeled summertime sled and a team of very excited Alaskan Huskies! Feel the power of these strong dogs as they whisk you down a mile-long, zig-zagging trail deep in the Tongass National Rainforest! After meeting your dog team, climb back into your unimog and enjoy the adventurous ride to a breathtaking overlook of the Dyea tidal flats. Depending on the month you just might see eagles, bears, seals, horseback riders, wild flowers, and of course snow-capped mountains. Your unimog will then bring you to what we like to call a “Kennel Talk.” We have been sharing our passion for dog sledding for years, and in that time we have gathered up the most frequently ask questions about the sport. In the Kennel Talk, we will share the fascinating answers and welcome any additional questions you may have. Of course, we make sure you have plenty of time to play with our puppies! Your affections actually socialize these future athletes, which is essential to their racing success. A crackling fire and a unique gift shop round out your visit. All of this in a spectacular Alaskan setting!

We came here on an excursion from our cruise. The ride is about 30 minutes from the ship but our driver (I believe his name was Bruce) was very funny, friendly and knowledgable who gave us some great info about Skagway. Once you reach the camp the then transfer you into what they call a Unamog to bring you up the hill to the sleds. There were 6 people to a sled which has wheels on it and it pulled by 16 dogs. Its just great fun being taken for a ride. But then once they bring you back down the hill you not only get a quick tutorial in mushing...you get to see and hold the puppies!!! Just awesome. Everyone there was super friendly. We had a great time.

We had a great guide (I think his name was Kevin). There were probably about 24 of us in the group. He took us from the cruise ship on a scenic 25-minute drive outside Skagway to a "base camp" that had a gift shop, restrooms and snack shop. From there, we took an off-road truck for a few minutes up the mountain where the Alaskan huskies met us for dog mushing. There were 4 sleds that held 6 passengers - each with a musher that explained the sport and the characteristics of the dogs pulling us. Back at the base camp, we learned more about the Iditerod and got to play with puppies. Not only did we learn about dog racing and how they have to work together as a team, but we learned about Skagway from our guide on the bus ride to and from the base camp. The trip lasted 3 hours, which was well worth it and also gave us time to explore Skagway as well.

Without a doubt, this was the most organized and well run operation we encountered during our 2 week land and sea Alaska tour. Very informative and genuinely nice people answer all your questions about this unique tradition and sport. Of course no side trip is complete without a souvenir shop at the end. We didn't see anything we couldn't leave without. The people working there and driving the bus is what makes this place stand out among the rest of the sled dog experiences offered by Princess.
