On a peaceful Sunday morning, we three joined five others for the Wild Louisiana Tours Manchac Magic tour. We met up with the main group at a travel center some 30 minutes west of the city, and then drove a short distance to the launch site. Our guide, Chelsea, was laid-back and very pleasant to talk with and listen to. We helped her unload the kayaks from her trailer and get all the equipment distributed, and then we were off, in three single kayaks and two doubles. Paddling is very easy; there's very little current and no waves or wind or anything in the swamp/bayou. We paddled among the cypress and tupelo trees, enjoying the peacefulness and unfamiliar sights. I wondered whether we'd have any close calls with alligators, but no; we saw plenty of them, mostly very small ones, but they kept their distance. Chelsea told us they were more scared of us than we of them. We saw quite a few (non-venomous) water snakes as well, and one (venomous) water moccasin, at a safe distance. But the most interesting critter we saw was a big, beautiful barred owl. We'd heard it hooting before we got close, and when we came up to it, the bird just hung out on a low branch, watching us and eating the critter it had just caught.
Chelsea was very well versed in the nature, history, and lore of this area, and she answered all our questions--it was just a great experience, paddling around with her.
In short, this was the nature-friendly, laid back and interesting way to get out of the city and see what the swamp looks and feels like. In March it wasn't hot or buggy. I would recommend this to anyone, we really enjoyed it.
