On a peaceful Sunday morning, we three joined five others for the Wild Louisiana Tours Manchac Magic tour. We met up with the main group at a travel center some 30 minutes west of the city, and then drove a short distance to the launch site. Our guide, Chelsea, was laid-back and very pleasant to talk with and listen to. We helped her unload the kayaks from her trailer and get all the equipment distributed, and then we were off, in three single kayaks and two doubles. Paddling is very easy; there's very little current and no waves or wind or anything in the swamp/bayou. We paddled among the cypress and tupelo trees, enjoying the peacefulness and unfamiliar sights. I wondered whether we'd have any close calls with alligators, but no; we saw plenty of them, mostly very small ones, but they kept their distance. Chelsea told us they were more scared of us than we of them. We saw quite a few (non-venomous) water snakes as well, and one (venomous) water moccasin, at a safe distance. But the most interesting critter we saw was a big, beautiful barred owl. We'd heard it hooting before we got close, and when we came up to it, the bird just hung out on a low branch, watching us and eating the critter it had just caught. Chelsea was very well versed in the nature, history, and lore of this area, and she answered all our questions--it was just a great experience, paddling around with her. In short, this was the nature-friendly, laid back and interesting way to get out of the city and see what the swamp looks and feels like. In March it wasn't hot or buggy. I would recommend this to anyone, we really enjoyed it.

My wife and I did the Manchac Magic kayaking tour one morning. The company will either pick you up in New Orleans or you can meet them about 20 minutes to the west and then a 5-minute caravan to the boat launch. You’ll spend about two hours on the water. Figure on 3-4 hours overall with transit to the put-in and back to New Orleans. Kayaks are sit-on-tops rather than sit-ins, but the water is calm enough where you’ll stay completely dry as long as you control your paddling. Small dry-bags are provided if you don’t have your own. Participants should expect to get their feet wet just getting in and out of the kayaks. Sunscreen is highly recommended. It wasn’t really buggy at all the day we went, but having bug spray on hand is probably a good idea. Wildlife is abundant, and frequently lets you get close. We saw multiple alligators, several water snakes (both swimming and sunning), egrets, herons, frogs (including several that hitchhiked on the kayak), and owls. The guide (Chelsie) did a good job telling us about the history of the area and pointing out wildlife. Overall a very enjoyable experience.

Outstanding kayak tour! Josh was very accommodating booking us for a late afternoon, potential sunset kayak paddle through the bayou. We were greeted by his dad, Max, and within a short drive, the kayaks were in the water and we were on our way. Max was very very informative and adventurous sharing his love of the bayou and nature. We learned lots about the plant life, native and invasive species, birds flying over, and a baby eagle in it's nest! Wow! Max had us well into the bayou and back just before dark and before any mosquitoes... a perfect end to our daylight touring the river plantations and reconnecting with nature. Thank you Max, Josh and Wild Louisiana Tours! -Ed & Tom
