Qualifier: To be fair this was probably the coldest, windiest day we have had all winter season. It was pretty brutal outside. But I still was very disappointed in the tour given by Matt. I purposefully booked this tour over others, because of the listening devices offered. I figured that even if I wandered a bit, I would still be able to hear every morsel that Matt had to say. I'm not sure if the weather cramped his style, but his talking points could probably have been consolidated into about 30 mins instead of the 3 hrs we spent with him.
Matt talked briefly thankfully we were mostly walking, and not just standing outside as we walked to the queue for the ferry to The Statue of Liberty. But as we waited approximately 10-15 mins to board the ferry, Matt had nothing to say. In fact he complimented the tour guide near us stating how he had a great voice that projected well, as we listened to him. Really? He also stated that he would not be speaking on the ferry since we would not all be sitting together. Lame!
At the SofL he again spoke briefly outside, I'm sure due to the weather, which we did all appreciate, and proceeded inside. Our first stop was the bathroom. Again he said, he would not be talking while people were in the bathroom, because he felt it was inappropriate to talk while people were using the bathroom. Since I nor he did not use the restroom, I sat for the next 15 mins with silence in my ear. I think if someone didn't want to hear him in their ear, they could have just shut it off. Poor decision! So the first hour or so of this tour, he spoke for no more then 10 mins, and part of that time was instructions for security etc.
I grant that this tour involves a bit of dead time, since you need to go through the security line twice and embark/ disembark the ferry twice. But as a docent myself, there are often times when the tour does not proceed as planned and I am stuck waiting to get in to a particular space. But I always have other stories to tell to fill that time. But this dead time is time he already knew existed, and could have been used more productively. And stay on topic! To talk 5-7 mins about Washington DC bc we were from there after just entering Ellis Island, was just not good. The other guests didn't want to hear about that and we already knew about what you were talking about bc we live there. I felt that we would have learned a lot more going ourselves and using the Ellis Island listening devices, and reading through the displays at the SofL.
To counter all that negativity, I must add that Matt was very nice and friendly and went above and beyond taking pictures of all of us at the SofL, getting down on the ground to snap the best picture. It was also obvious that he had a wide and intensive knowledge base. I just wished he shared more of it with us.
This was the best tour of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Our guide knew the history and made the event meaningful for all in our group. He modified what we saw to meet what we wanted to see and do. He gave us advise on where to get the perfect photos and even took photos so we could all be in the pictures. While you can do other tours or do this on your own, you will not hear and learn the small details that our guide knew.
great tour,,,,,the best tour guide we have ever had...on any tour bar none....Diana,you are very good at what you do,,,,very informative
