Surfing - Group Lesson - Waikiki, Oahu

Overview

Learn to surf on this 2-hour group lesson on Oahu. Join a group of students and discover how to ride the waves like some of the Island's most famous celebrities with the help of a certified, professional instructor. We have small student to instructor ratio of 1 instructor for every 3-4 students. Waikiki Surf Lesson starts a 10 minute safety slide show inside our surf shop, followed by heading to the beach and practicing on the sand for another 10 minutes. In our 20 year experience, we know that surfing is muscle memory, so when first timers master their surf stance then they tend to get up on their very first wave.

My wife and I took the group lesson in the afternoon. The instructors are caring and kind. When the waves came, they asked you to paddle and in the meantime pushed your board hard to give you an initial speed. The surfing boards used for beginners are wide and long. In the end all 6 people in my lesson managed to stand up. It was such a fun experience. In addition they sent a cameraman to take pictures of you while you are surfing and give you a disc containing the pictures for free!

This was our second time taking the group lesson at Hans Hedemann - the first time was 5 years ago. The instructors are great - very friendly and they provide enough instruction to get everyone up without spending lots and lots of time on the beach. We were a group of four and we all got quite a few long rides. Highly recommend.

My daughter wanted surfing lessons, but didn't want to go alone so I joined her. The 2 women in the office were great, they knew we were short on time to get to another event after the lessons and made it happen! The young kid that 'read' the slide show was not great - I can read so that wasn't helpful. We had Adam and Duke as instructors. They were fine except they left out an important detail - how to 'steer' the surfboard so my daughter and I ended up way out of the way and no body bothered to come after us. She finally managed to get to the group and was told, 'well we just let you guys do your own thing if you want' Well I didn't want, I couldn't get there. Finally Duke came and told me how to steer. Once I got to the group Duke was helpful and my daughter had a great time and did well. I was horrible but I had fun trying. I did give Duke a hug afterword and said I had fun - because it was. My suggestion - make sure you give good instruction so everyone knows what to do and please don't treat people like they are 'just doing their own thing'.
