Overview

Learn to surf on this 2-hour group lesson on Oahu. Join a group of students and discover how to ride the waves like some of the Island's most famous celebrities with the help of a certified, professional instructor. We have small student to instructor ratio of 1 instructor for every 3-4 students. Waikiki Surf Lesson starts a 10 minute safety slide show inside our surf shop, followed by heading to the beach and practicing on the sand for another 10 minutes. In our 20 year experience, we know that surfing is muscle memory, so when first timers master their surf stance then they tend to get up on their very first wave.

My special best friend, Ben, and I signed ourselves up for a group surfing lesson during our time in Turtle Bay Resort and we totally enjoyed our first experience in surfing. We have nothing but praises for the 2 awesome instructors that we had with us! Kalae and Sam are very passionate about the sport and they were so patient to coach Ben and I right from the beginning of the lesson. They are also very encouraging and constantly provided assurance to keep us going on, and gave constant motivation to help us overcome our fear and fatigue . Ben had Kalae as his instructor who understands Ben's learning needs and gave him the time and space to try the surfing techniques on his own once he starts to get the hang of surfing the wave. Kalae kept a constant lookout for Ben even while he let him try out on his own and he definitely made Ben's experience a pleasant one as he helped to do all the hard work of positioning Ben in the best way possible so that he can catch the best waves. I had Sam with me for the entire lesson and he was so assuring even when I took a longer time to overcome my fear and in getting ready to take on the wave. It's really heartwarming to have Sam sharing life stories that we can learn from surfing. From the 2 hours spent with him, Sam reminded me of the importance of resilience and to have faith in myself. He was there for me throughout the lesson and would always cheer me on whenever I made little improvements. With Sam constantly there for me, it definitely helped to build up on my confidence and pushed me on further. What Ben and I both love about Kalae and Sam is that they are very experienced and took really good care of us for the entire time! They were constantly looking out for us and cheering us on whenever we achieved little success. During times when we needed more push, they were always around for us to give us the push when needed. We can't ask for more dedicated instructors like Kalae and Sam! Should we head back to Oahu one day, we would love to be back here again! Thanks for the awesome experience, Kalae and Sam! Special thanks to the entire crew at Hans Hedemann Surf School too! Really great service provided by the team right from helping us with the booking of the lesson to taking pictures during the lesson! We really appreciate all that has been done for us! My husband and I signed up for 2 hours of group surf lessons. We had 2 others in our group. That was ample time for learning the basics on the ground and time in the water. Never had surfed before, we both easily were able to stand up, not for long, but mission accomplished! They have a very friending and patient staff! The school was located within the Turtle Bay resort, so it was great to take advantage of their pool and pool bar for snacks and drinks afterwards.

We are in Waikiki, of course we are going to try surfing! I researched doing this and decided on Hans because we needed a reservation for our schedule and the cost seemed reasonable for a three hour lesson. So, we reserved ahead of time and everything went very smoothly to check in. Equipment is fine. Three hours was too much time for my husband and I, but my teenagers stayed out the whole time. It would be a good amount of time if you wanted to rest a little. It is a lot of work paddling out each time and you get tired quickly. What I didn't like - they say one instructor per 3-4 people. We were a group of four so I thought we'd get an instructor. Nope. It was a group of twelve people with three instructors and they kinda pair you up randomly and then you all get separated in the water. So, I didn't really like that. What I did like - instructors were good with my kids (although they were "too nice" to my 18 year old daughter...), they gave us a disc of pictures and a t shirt, which was very nice. If you have a friend along that doesn't want to surf, it is easy for them to video or take pictures. There was a nice beach cafe near there to get a snack or drink.
