This is a geek-out review. Sorry. Just so great.
Seth Elmer and Luis are excellent instructors. Pro surfers! Their passion and knowledge made a huge difference; the learning curve is huge and even as a complete newbie I managed to catch some waves. But most of all it was massive fun.
Everything is well thought-out, from the location to the complete supply of gear and boards through to the step-by-step instruction and the constant guidance. Even though it was group instruction, with two instructors for five of us and very tailored coaching it felt more like a private lesson.
The beach is jawdroppingly beautiful, secluded, with good waves and shallow waters making it feel very safe. We started off with a few warm-up stretches and then practiced on the beach before hitting the water. Perfect pacing.
We were at the south shore location between Kuhio and Kapiolani which seems ideal for beginners and or families with young children but I can imagine that more experienced surfers would enjoy the rougher waves of the north shore location. Definitely Seth and Luis would be able to guide surfers of all abilities. But they show themselves to be real pros because they are incredibly patient, super positive and so encouraging with beginners like me and my partner.
Afterwards there’s a chance to have a good laugh because it’s all captured on video. If your ego can bear it, you can take the memories home with you (costs $35). The surfing lesson itself is well worth the money.
Possibly my favourite two hours in Waikiki. Definitely would go back.
