I went on the Official Art Deco Tour when staying in Miami over the weekend in between meetings in the US as I was fascinated by the prospect of seeing Miami's Deco having recently returned from Havana, and getting to know a bit more about the movement. Our guide (Scott) was a natural, and started by taking us 'back in time' to the 70s and 80s when the Art Deco district was basically in ruins - it was great to get the context of how Art Deco has been viewed since it was created, through its dark days and how it is now treasured as one of the critical architectural movements of the 20th century. The tour only takes in a small portion of the enormous number (something like 1200 from memory) of listed buildings in the area, but it covers some iconic locations (e.g. the hotel where the opening scene of Miami Vice was shot) as well as progression through the era, so you finish the tour understanding the difference between say early 30s and late 30s Art Deco. I'd thoroughly recommend this tour to anyone with an interest in either architecture or urban development, decay and renewal.

MDPL is a great nonprofit organization that truly has a passion for the architecture of Miami Beach and the history. The tours are very interesting, insightful, and the tour guides can answer the most detailed of questions. Even if you're not "into architecture" you'll find these very interesting. They have multiple different types of tours, but most of them are only available on art deco weekend. The standard ocean drive tour is offered every day. It is really an excellent introduction to Miami Beach and every visitor should do it. It will give you a new perspective and understand why "old" isn't "bad" and what gives Miami Beach it's unique charm.

A treasure in Miami Beach are the comprehensive tours offered by the Miami Design and Preservation Leauge, covering the city's extensive treasure trove of Art Deco structures. Of course, one can walk along him or herself and look at the buildings on Ocean Drive and nearby streets. However, the ultra knowledgeable tour guides provided by the League have all the background information you need to know about the buiidlings, their architects, and how they fit into the historical backdrop of this part of Miami Beach, commonly called South Beach. You also will walk away with an architect's knoweldge of what Art Deco is, for example the "Rule of Three" (if you wish to find out what this is, I suggest you go on a tour). These various tours are definitely worth your while. In addtion, the League also offers tours on South Beach's gay and lesbian history, as well as other tours which highlight examples of Miami Modern (or MIMO) archeitecture and some Mediterranean Revival. All amongst the awesome energy of South Beach. Take a look. you won't regret it one bit. Paul E. Czekanski Miami, Florida
