The Official Art Deco Gift Shop

Founded in 1976, The Miami Design Preservation League has proudly offered guided walking tours of The Art Deco District for over 40 years. All Proceeds go towards supporting preservation. Visitors are introduced to the history, architecture, and preservation efforts of Miami Beach. Tour ticket includes free admission to the Art Deco Museum and Gift Shop. There are a limited amount of tickets available for each tour, so early bookings are encouraged . Please arrive 15 minutes prior to tour departure for check-in.

This tour is really informative, but the tour guides can be really variable. The properties are magnificent and the tour guides are very well versed in the information, but the tour can be a bit overblown with unnecessary narrative, for example: My guide obsessed over correct spellings, and told long uninteresting anecdotes about Frank Sinatra and the filming of Hole In The Head, a movie few people have ever seen. The tour ran way way over the time we were told, and we ended up missing some of the best parts at the end because of all this excessive background info. At the same time, you will learn a lof of the basics of Art Deco design features, so that you can then apply what you've learned to properties in Miami Beach in general So -- just a warning -- you might get a long-winded guide -- budget extra time for this tour so that you don't miss any of it!!

End of March 2010, we stayed 4 days in SoBe. We bought a fantastic little yellow guide called "The locals's guide to South Beach" for 8.95$ which included a 5$ MPDL coupon for the MPDL guided Art Deco walking tour. We took the tour and were failry disapointedby the amateurism of this guide. The "guide" was a former teacher, a blond/redhead man in his early 30's, and besides 3-4 comments which he repeated at every single house, we learned nothing. I asked questions about the importance of the Art deco quarter in comparaison to other cites in the world and he could not say a word. I asked about Art Deco's history and he did not know a lot... I even had to remind him the date (year) of Versace's assasination. We were first think in renting the MP3 recording and doing the tour by ourselves, but, we thought a tour with a "real" guide would be better and it was not. it would have been better to read what was into this little booklet and do the tour by ourselves or with the MP3 recording. we paid 35$ for 2 (inclufing the 5$ coupon) for 1h30 of the same: "Art deco has 3 columns, eyebrows sunshields and boat shape architecture."...

This walking tour was a great. Art deco architecture is everywhere in South Beach, and learning about it helped us to appreciate it more. The tickets ($20) were easy to get even at the last minute, and our guide was enthusiastic and knowledgable. I loved that not only did we see plenty of exterior art deco architecture, but also that we were able to tour the ground floors of many buildings to see art deco furniture and its interior applications! It was a unique, fun and interesting experience!
