I've gotten into kayaking at home and wanted to experience doing some in Kauai. We signed up with Duke's Kayak Adventures and weren't disappointed. We were promptly met as we arrived by a friendly staff. After checking in they reviewed safety tips with the group then gave us a waterproof bag for our belongings. We were then shuttled to the starting point of the tour on the Wailua river. The trip then consisted of kayaking to another point up river where we tied them up to begin the hike to the waterfall. Now I'm not sure why some people felt ill-prepared. I think we were properly forewarned about the hike and the possible trail conditions due to the fact that March is their "rainy" season. So it wasn't a surprise to us that the trail was muddy. In fact at some points we were up to our knees in the stuff.....but hey....it added to the adventure. I didn't find it particularly hard but I do exercise regularly at home. The one thing that made it slow going was the mud. I will say to take their advice seriously about not bringing shoes you care about because they will get dirty. The endpoint of the hike was a beautiful waterfall were we stopped and had lunch. I thought the sandwiches were great and pretty much what I expected as I've been on similar tours before. Bear in mind the lunch was optional and only an additional $10. You can certainly bring your own but that means you'll also have to carry it too. Why bother right? After all I'm on vacation! We spent about 30 minutes or so there and were then guided back to the kayaks. I enjoyed the scenery as we paddled back to the starting point. Overall we had a great time. It met my expectations for sure and I thought our guide Ryan was great. He was engaging, friendly and made a point to speak to everyone on the tour. So I'd recommend these guys. Be prepared for the paddling and the hiking.

Kauai had a lot of rain lately, and they warned us that it was gonna be super muddy. As promised, so delivered! I have to say their customer service is excellent. We originally had the trip booked before a luau, and we realized that we'd be too late. So, five minutes before departure they let us move to the next day. It saved our night (Luau Kalamaku is excellent) and we came back the next day ready for more adventures. Day 2: We show up and our guide Evan was there waiting for us and a few other people to come with us. We started off getting gear and wet bags to keep our clothes and lunches dry and clean. Then we took a ride in the van over to the Wailua River. After a brief tutorial we got started paddling upriver. It was a perfect day to be out there. The Sun was shining, there was a mild breeze and we were ready to paddle out. It's a 2 mile paddle up to the hiking point and from there we hoof it. Evan warned us numerous times that it was going to be the muddiest, slickest, squishiest hike conditions that it could be. No problem! The hike was invigorating and the views amazing. My only complaint is that you spend all your time looking where you put your feet, so you must remember to look up and enjoy the views. We stopped at an old queen's waterfall bath and then followed the mud trail up to the "secret" wailua falls. The falls are amazing. With all the rain we had, it was flowing 1.5x its usual volume so it was really going off. We had bagel sandwiches and chips for lunch (the perfect amount) and started swimming in the waterfalls pool. Then I swam out to the fall and walked behind it to get the full falls treatment. Breathtaking. The hike and paddle back is more of the same, all good. Our guide Evan did a fantastic job. He gave us excellent instructions on how to avoid slipping on our butts, told lots of jokes and kept us laughing throughout. He's a guy who loves his job and it shows. I'd go back and do it again. Overall the hike wasn't too rough- but the mud made it awful slippery. You don't need to be super fit for this trip, but if it's been raining then the difficulty goes up because it is hard to stay on your feet.

I chose Dukes after doing some quick research on the web. My girl friend and I were looking to really get close to the island. We met Evan our tour guide at their east side location for a checking. We loaded up in the van and took a short 10 minute ride to our kayak location. The paddle up river was smooth, peaceful and calm. The river was beautiful. Next we took at 1 mile hike to the secret falls which were spectacular especially if you've never been in waterfall. The biggest plus was the Evan our tour guide was a blast. This is the type of person you want leading the group! - Derek
