This kayak/hike trip was a great way to see Kauai and it's many splendors. Our guide, Jeffrey, was terrific, fun, knowledgable and patient. Our group of five met up, trucked over to the marina, and then hopped into our kayaks for a 3-mile paddle up Wailua River. Yanked the boats onto the shore of a small Polynesian village, crossed the stream ... and then the real adventure began. A ruddy, muddy trek through the rain forest. (Mud was, at times, knee deep.) Then hiked to Secret Falls, a 120-foot waterfall. Our guide laid out quite a good lunch on a long Taro leaf arranged on a rock. (You can order gluten-free.) Swimming under the waterfall was delightful (and a great opportunity to wash off the mud!) After this respite, we headed back on the trail and finally reached our kayaks. By this time we were plenty tired from the physicality of the afternoon. BUT we loved it! Important suggestions: * I am strong and in good physical shape. Do NOT take this if you are not in shape. *Wear shoes with traction to do the hike safely and enjoyably. * Bring bug spray and sun lotion. The tour took about 5 hours. Was challenging and fun.

The day we made this trip was not the best. I'll tell you up front. It was Jeffrey's first solo tour, and he did a good job. The weather and hike conditions worked against us, though. The kayak trip up river was very pleasant. No major problems until we came to a place where some limbs had come down and blocked our way. That slowed us down a bit, but we made it through. The hike to the falls was very strenuous and slippery. The area had experienced quite a bit of rain the day before we went, so we had to slog through many water holes. At times the mud as almost to our knees. Picking our way through the tree roots and mud holes was challenging. Like I say, if I had to do it over again, I'm not sure I would do it. Once we arrived at the falls, we enjoyed the view and the break for lunch. The returning hike was a slightly different route which proved to be easier traveling. We kayaked back in the rain, with thunder and lightning and the wind in our face. We were soaked! Good exercise, but the hike was tougher than I had anticipated.

This activity consists of a 45 minute kayak paddle up the Wailua RIver, a one hour walk through forest, and a brief visit to a really pretty waterfall. For the activity to be worth you time, all three parts have to work out just right. Otherwise, with so many other attractions in Kauai, this isn't worth your time and money. When we went, the kayaking was OK (I doubt it's ever better than OK), the trail was horrendous (unbelievably muddy), and the waterfall, while pretty, had so much water that there was no swimming in the pool around it. If there has been any significant rain in the last 4-6 days, DO NOT GO. The tour operators will not tell you about this until it's too late. If you're not sure, DO NOT GO. If you do go, take insect repellant. Despite the misinformation from our guide, you will need it. We didn't like Duke's, but there were other tour operators doing the same tour at the same time, and their customers were as muddy and miserable as us. It's not the tour operator, it's the tour itself. Find something else to do.
