The tour guide was very informative. We took the uptown and saw so many sites. I would do this again.

I have enjoyed all hop on/hop off bus tours until this experience. Despite having printed out our tickets, with UPC code on it, we were told we had to walk to the first stop/office on our first day. On the tickets, it clearly stated that we could hop on and off any stop and our printed ticket would initally be scanned. Not so. The line was long at the first stop/office housed in Madame Toussad's. Two other groups in line next to us were also disgruntled at having to wait in line. Didn't matter if the printed ticket was a UPC or URL. Who knows how far they had to walk to get there. The person at the desk was unsurprised and unappologetic. We eventually got processed and seated on the bus. Things went fine, it was a very average experience. A very unpleasant surprise came when we were back on the bus later and came to a stop. "Everyone off!" yelled the announcer over and over. "This is the last stop" A couple of people had just gotten on the bus on the previous stop and now the entire bus was made to get off the bus. Some people who clearly didn't speak English were confused and greatly concerned. Now, a reasonable person would expect that the hop on/hop off feature of the bus would mean just that, and that the bus would continue in its loop/route. Again, not so. Know that you will be forced to get off the bus and made to walk from wherever the last stop is! We encountered the same thing the next day when we first walked to the Empire State Building. We wanted to then do the Uptown Blue Route, but were told that since the big bus stop there was the last one on the uptown tour we could not get on it! Again, this is not a hop on/hop off feature you might expect. We had several workers who told us to go to different stops in order to get an uptown bus. All but one were incorrect and in the area we were in many more downtown buses were running than uptown ones. We were told the uptown buses were about every 20-30" and the downtown were about every 5-10". By then we had walked at least a couple miles and waited before getting on an uptown bus. Big waste of our time!! Through no fault of Big Bus, traffic was being rerouted because of a parade so we were out of luck getting near the Met Museum. That entailed another long walk after about 15 minutes on the bus. We were relieved to take the subway back and regret having gotten the Big Bus at all. I cannot recommend it.

Booked online the two day deluxe bus tour that included three bus tour routes, a night tour, either a cruise around Manhattan or a visit to the Empire State Building and a ticket to the NY Museum. Things didn't get off to the best of starts when we struggled to find the venue in Time Square to get our tickets printed out, which was hidden inside the Madam Tussauds foyer. There was a sizeable queue even early morning but the guy who served us eventually was very helpful. We hopped on the Downtown tour and the guide was rather poor. He mumbled on about banal things and had the annoying habit of giving a short laugh after every sentence. We then took the uptown bus and the guide was much better, he was informative and had a great sense of humour. Finally that day, we did the night tour and the lady guide, who said she was in her 70s, was tremendous with encyclopaedic knowledge and an engaging but relaxed style. The following day we visited the Empire State building and our tickets worked fine and then took the Circle Line cruise around the island. After the cruise, our luck was in and just outside Pier 83 we caught the Midtown bus back to Time Square before boarding the Downtown bus in order to visit the 9/11 Memorial. The guide, an elderly gentleman from Witchita Kansas was so intent on showing off his knowledge of NY that he was failed to give warning about the stops, assuming that as this was the last departure that evening then no-one wanted to hop off the bus. So we missed our stop and had quite a walk to the Memorial. The wait times were not too bad but the traffic was heavy all day long on both days. Having the UN General Assembly in town that week meant that many streets on the east side were closed and other routes became clogged as a result, which wasn't the fault of Big Bus, who had to amend some of their routes. The multi language commentaries were very brief and gave nowhere near as much information as the live English commentary. At the start of the tour I would have scored the tour company 1 star and after the night tour I would have given it 5 stars. Overall it was good value but the quality of the tour guides varies considerably so there is an element of pot luck. We never experienced any undue pressure to tip whenever you left the bus.
