The Needles Highway is more than a 14-mile road—it’s a spectacular drive through pine and spruce forests, meadows surrounded by birch and aspen, and rugged granite mountains. The road’s name comes from the needlelike granite formations that seem to pierce the horizon along the highway. The roadway was carefully planned by former South Dakota Governor Peter Norbeck, who marked the entire course on foot and by horseback. Construction was completed in 1922. Short stops at Sylvan Lake and for viewing unique rock formation called the Needle's Eye, so named for the opening created by wind, rain, freezing, and thawing.

Our family really enjoyed this excursion. Mike was our driver/guide, he was great. It was just our family of 5 for the day as it’s a small group tour and we loved that about this trip. We learned so much more about the area than we would have if we had just went on our own. Mile knew the best spots and most scenic drives. He recommended a little store in custard for lunch and it was very good. All together a perfect day. At the end of the day Mike took us back to our car and asked if we all had all of our things and we all said yes, only to discover 10 minutes later one in our group left her phone in the van. We called Mike and he found it and was so kind to bring it to us in his own vehicle on his way home. For anyone with walking issues, we had one with a bad knee and one with a bad hip. There were very few stairs with the exception of one of the studios at crazy horse, but you could just not go down to that level if you aren’t able and wouldn’t miss much at all. Just let your guide know if you aren’t able to do stairs. 10 out of 10 would recommend this

Howdy Holly - Thank you for your very kind review. Mike is a retired principle and enjoys sharing the history of the region with our guests. You are correct in suggesting the people inform their guide of any special conditions so we can tailor the tour to fit. Be Well - Rich

Great job with the tour, very knowledgeable guide, very memorable experiences. They worked with me for rescheduling when there was fog that would not allow us to go as planned.

Hi Edward - I'm glad you finally got to see Mt Rushmore on the second try. We know how important visiting it is to everyone. Thank you for taking time to review. I hope you can return and see more of the Hills. Be Well - Rich

Our guide mike was awesome. He had some great facts to share with us. Dropped us at the door wherever we went. Didn't have open top vehicle so that was a little disappointing. Even though it was a hot day, would've been great to have view overhead. The price overall for the your was pricey. 200 a person was way too much for having a driver etc. Only included a snack n water.

Hi Charity - Thank you for taking time to review your tour. I'm glad you enjoyed the tour with Mike . . . sorry you didn't like the vehicle. Just to clarity - Our Public "Bundle" tour is conducted in vans and minivans, because the six hour "Bundle" tour spends most of the time at the monuments, the drive between monuments is short. It is possible you are confused with our Private FULL DAY Mt Rushmore Crazy Horse and Custer State Park Wildlife Loop - a 10 hour tour that tours in a convertible top van or Jeep. It includes a lakeside picnic lunch, it does cost more. All tours include bottled water and snacks. Private tours include lunch. Be Well - Rich To our future Guests - Please take time to read the description for each tour before purchasing. Please don't assume that because our company name is Open Top Tours that every tour is a convertible. Our convertible top vans and Jeeps are designed for tours of Custer State Park Wildlife Loop. You can just stand and look down at the bison. We use standard vans with cold AC to visit the Badlands Park (currently 104 F) and for the Bundle Tour to Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse - these are walking tours and don't require convertible vehicles. Please contact us if you would like more information about our tours or general info about the Black Hills region. Thanks and Be Well - Rich
