This was our second exploration of the New Whitney Museum in the Meat Packing District on Ganesvoort Street. The building is spacious and very enjoyable to walk through. There are 8 floors, not counting the basement area for coat-check, etc., and the upper several floors, besides having exhibition spaces, have outdoor patios that are connected by stairways. The 8th floor patio offers a great view of Manhattan. The 5th floor has a separate patio on the north side of the building which at the moment has two huge Stella sculptures. The 5th floor Stella retrospective is amazing if you have followed any of Frank's career. This latest visit we spent mostly on the 8th floor viewing the work of Archibald Motley who we had never heard of before, but we found his painting to be enlightening and visually fascinating. The exterior design of the building is as modern as the institution itself, and I am sure we have yet to explore and discover all the details. Check out the elevators... the interior of each has been design by a different artist. Allow yourself at least 2 hours to explore a couple floors. More than one visit is almost a certainty!

The Whitney is one of New York's fabulous four museums and you will not a regret visiting here. The best parts are the outside exhibits on several floors and the incredible views as well.

I love this building so much more than the old. Location next to start of High Line is an added bonus. Interesting views too. So for the art, we were lucky enough to see the Stella exhibit. Not my favorite but the docent tour helped us appreciate his work. Tours of different areas of the museum seem to occur on the hour and are helpful. Permanent collection quite diverse. The museum is also a great size. Large enough for an afternoon but not overwhelming.
