8 floors of American Art that will capture your imagination and motivate your senses. The Frank Stella exhibit is grand and larger than life. His pieces allow you to appreciate the intricacies entailed to making a work of art. Spacious and inviting floor plan, especially enjoyed the juxtaposition of the balcony layout of art. Take advantage of the generous pay what you wish on the first Friday of the month. Benefactors of these museums are one of the many reasons that make New York City great!

Fantastic building with floors and floors of art. Loved going outside on various balconies for views of skyline, the High Line etc. Frank Stella exhibit marvelous and nice that you can take as many photos as you like. I wish museums could create two different audio tours to break up the crowds in different directions. Our teenage kids not enthused but most likely due to huge Christmas week crowds.

During my visit, I saw the Frank Stella retrospective exhibit at the Whitney and could not have been more satiated. Stella is a living artist with a studio down the street in Greenwich Village and creates artworks that are eye-catching and thought-provoking, with the exhibit highlighting key periods of his life and artistic development. When he travels to India, you see glitter and coke cans enter his sculptural paintings. When he expresses his take on an earthquake, you see graffiti and elegant repeating patterns in a massive wall-spanning work of collage and paint. You see his fascination with Moby Dick and iterations on a theme of the whale, the chase, impending doom, and uncertainty. The guided tour was also helpful to seeing his works with a new lens, culminating in his latest works, framed against a backdrop of the Hudson and cityscape beyond out the window behind his massive construction. The rest of the museum is equally impressive. Another excellent exhibition of Archibald Motley's took up most of one floor and showed off his well-known jazz paintings as well as his lesser-known but perhaps even better portraits. Though not as well-known as his American contemporaries Thomas Hart Benton, Joseph Stella, and Edward Hopper (all also featured on different floors of the Whitney), his work documented an important perspective of race relations, entertainment, and daily life in an underrepresented community. The rest of the Whitney also focuses on 'modern art', based on their collection, spanning roughly 1915 through now. The collection omits turn-of the century neo-impressionism and impressionism largely in favor of later works by seminal artists ranging from de Kooning to Pollock to Joseph Alberts to Christopher Wool. It's a funky collection that does not necessarily represent entire movement or progressions of art, but it does provide a good survey of the diversity of modern art as well as works by currently active artists that is rare to find in other well-known museums. Good to know: The Whitney has several cafes, a bookshop, and very convenient bathrooms and resting couches throughout.
