All of the other reviews are spot on! Fabulous new space, both inside and out. We loved the Stella and Motley shows. Both so very different, so very American. We were there between Christmas and New Years, and though the ticket line outside stretched to the street, inside the museum we never felt crowded (exceptions: the elevator, the cafe and the tour for Motley was crowded and it was difficult to hear the guide unless you were right next to her). We were lucky to be with members, so we didn't have to wait in the line for admission.

The older Whitney Museum of American Art had been closed for over a year while they finished this brand new museum in the meat packing district. And I'm glad to say it was worth the wait. We went at night on a Saturday when it was open until 10pm. The stores around the museum are open until 8pm so they might be worth a visit. Particularly the Warby Parker eyeglass store that doesn't exist where we come from. But back to the Whitney. The highlights were the Archibald Motley and Frank Stella retrospectives. Nice to see so many works by the same artists each on a dedicated floor. As part of the permanent collection of American art there were a few of Thomas Hart Benton, Edwards Hopper, and the iconic Firpo vs Dempsey fight by George Bellows. I try to find American art when I travel in America but this museum really has a vast collection under one roof. They surely don't have room for them all under one roof and must rotate the collection frequently. That's why I'll make sure to include it in my next trip to New York. BTW. If you're from Toronto and a member of the AGO, you get in free. The building is nicely laid out and feels good as you walk through the exhibits. Why this is I'm not sure. Some museums are like that. I suppose that's what good architecture is about. Didn't get a chance to try the food or have a coffee. Next time.

It's still a great deal for seeing this museum, now at the southern end of the High Line. But they won't let you get away with nothing. (Regular admission as of today is $22) Went on a Friday evening in December and would call it busy but not mobbed.
