I am not sure if I am the few ones - but I enjoyed Whitney far better than MoMA. Whitney narrates the American Art well - with some beautiful key works that captures the heart of both locals and tourists. Best of all - is just next to the High Line!

I was so looking forward to visiting the new Whitney but it turned out to be a major disappointment. The design does not allow for easy access to the 7 floors. You are forced to use a set of elevators that are very slow in arriving or use stairways that are tedious and not for anyone not in top physical shape. No escalators - a major mistake. Ticketing is slow due to too few employees at their stations of which there are 10 but only 3 were available on the day I visited thus causing a traffic jam. The galleries are generically lighted. Very few to none of the collection are individually illuminated. With today's led lighting choices another major disappointment. The collection was better served in the old Brewer building where choices had to be made due to the limited gallery space. Here too many second level works are on display. The flooring to me is unattractive as is the building in general. This building is in a flood zone as is all Manhattan actually. I loved the old building and it's location near the Met, Neue Gallery, Guggenheim and Jewish Museum. Oh well if you have never seen the collection it is still worth a visit.

I went to the Whitney with my teenage daughter and we both loved all five floors of American art from every era. We arrived about 15 minutes before opening time and did not have to stand in line very long but when we left a few hours later, the line was down the street. We checked our coats in the basement then started on the fifth floor and worked our way down. However, intermittently we joined a docent tour. I would highly recommend the docent tours. One woman our our tour kept commenting how wonderful the docent was but when we joined other tours, the docents were equally good - they talk about the life story of the artist, the influences, time period, and even pointed out techniques they used down to individual brushstrokes in some cases. The new art museum is well lit with natural sunlight. It is well worth going outside and up the exterior steps to see the view. We spend between 2-3 hours and could have stayed longer if we had the attention span and better shoes. It is hard to absorb and appreciate more than 2 - 3 hours of art and information unless you have more mental endurance than the average appreciator of the arts. There are benches on each floor to sit to take a break because it is a lot of walking and standing to see everything. The tours can get crowded but hang in there and stick close to the docent and you'll see and hear a lot of fascinating information. The High Line begins outside the Whitney so that is a good attraction to combine to make a great visit to the Meatpacking District in NYC. There may be closer connections via subway but our subway stop at 8th Ave & 14th Street was several blocks away from the Whitney so be prepared to walk.
