What To Expect
1
The Mitten Buttes And Merrick Butte
First, we'll assign you a horse based on your experience, weight, and height. Then we'll start galloping towards the West Mitten Butte, followed by the East Mitten Butte. They are also known together as, The Mittens. When viewed from the south, the buttes appear to be two gigantic mittens with their thumbs facing inwards. If you capture the Merrick Butte at an angle you see that it's between the West & East Mitten Buttes. All three buttes are commonly seen together in many popular films and images. Its elevation is over 6,200 ft making it one of the tallest buttes in Monument Valley.
2
Sentinel Mesa
Located northwest of The Mittens, it's a mountain with an elevation of over 6,400 ft. Most of the mesa is in the state of Utah, but a small southern section of it is in the state of Arizona. This breathtaking mesa can be seen from the Monument Valley Visitor Center.

Elijah was our guide and he was exceptional. He had tremendous knowledge about the landmarks, vegetation, Navajo culture, tradition as well as horses. This was a truly enjoyable experience, from start to finish!

My spouse and I truly enjoyed this tour. Our guide took us through the desert floor of Monument Valley near the visitorā€™s center. It had very pretty scenery and some interesting stories. The horses were in good condition, not ribby at all, and had good temperaments. Our guide provided the opportunity to trot and lope, but we mostly walked. The weather was perfect. We would do this again.

The horse riding in Monument Valley was THE HIGHLIGHT of our trip to the Southwest. My girls are into horses, while myself and my son are not really horse people. But that ride through this unique and marvelous landscape on a horseback was simply unbelievable, magical. A MUST DO for those who can. The horses were great, the guide perfect. Sacred Tours has their horses right at the rim from which you have the famous view and then they guide you down into the valley away from the cars. So it's quiet, only you, the horses, the guide and nature. Fantastic, and words cannot capture it all.
