Black Cat Historical Day Tour

Overview
Our daytime historic tour is a story of Pirates and Puritans, Witchcraft and War.  We travel around the city of Salem and share the tales of its amazing history.  From its humble beginnings as a city founded on the idea of peace for all, to the site of the largest incident of witchcraft hysteria in the modern world, learn how it became one of the biggest shipping ports in America, played host to some of the most famous authors of all time, and learn some of the biggest secrets this city has to offer!

Our daytime walking tour lasts about an hour and forty five minutes, and covers a mile's worth of the downtown area. It is an easy walk, but we suggest comfortable shoes and clothing to match the season. Our tours are unscripted, and can be customized to every group's particular areas of interest!

We were showing an out-of-town friend the glories of Salem at Hallowe'en-time, and decided to sign up for a tour. Really glad we did; we had a wonderful time! We did the daytime Historical Walking Tour, and drew Lara as our guide. She was as close to perfection as you could ask for: warm, friendly, engaging and thoroughly knowledgeable. While her presentations at each stop included a good deal of detail, she spoke more in the manner of a storyteller, which made everything much more inviting (particularly for someone like me, who usually doesn't care for 'touristy' activities). She was happy to take questions and was full of little interesting side-stories, and was even able to make some recommendations on places to eat & drink afterwards! She also presented without the use of amplification, which was a real plus; that may seem a small thing, but to me it's the difference between being spoken *to*, rather than *at*. The tour route is made up of short walks and multiple stops, so your feet won't be aching at the end; I'd say the distances would be suitable for anyone who can walk unassisted. The tour lasted just shy of ninety minutes, but it flew by! Next time, I think we'll do the nighttime Ghost Tour...

Third year taking tours in Salem MA first year a tour with Daniel before he was proprietor of Black Cat. Such an entertaining and knowledgeable guide that we tracked him down the following year, even though it was a rainy yucky evening he gave his all on a tour with just my daughter her friend and I. This year my daughter and I were lucky enough to take a tour with Lara she was also entertaining and knowledgeable. As it was a small group she was kind enough to share a personal story or two with us. No doubt when we find ourselves in Salem again we will be sure to learn and laugh with Black Cat Tours again.

Went on the day version of this tour while in Salem the weekend before Halloween (a very busy time in this area). I really appreciated the fact that even though the tour was "sold out" there was only about 20-30 people actually on it. I passed by one tour group earlier in the day that looked like it had 100+ people. Being in a smaller group made it easier to follow the guide and hear everything he said. Overall, the tour was wonderful and very informative. The guide told very detailed stories about the history of Salem (he could literally teach a class on Salem - that's how knowledgeable he seemed) and took the group to certain notable areas. I definitely recommend checking out the day version of this tour if you'd like to hear/see some great (often little-known) aspects of historical Salem!
