Comb Jelly Bioluminescence Kayak Tour

Overview
In the cooler Florida months, bioluminescent Comb Jellies congregate in the protected waters of the Indian River Lagoon. Living in the most bio-diverse estuary in North America, Comb Jellies are clear, glob-like creatures that, despite their name, do not sting! So as you paddle the calm waters laced with mangroves and palm trees, you can catch and hold these gentle glowing creatures. They're right at your fingertips while having a safe, awe-inspiring kayak adventure with those who share your enthusiasm for new and unique experiences.

In addition to the stars, the myriad of protected wildlife around you, and the Comb Jelly’s bioluminescence, their “ribs” are lined with cilia that they use to propel themselves, so when you cast a flashlight on them just right, they’ll also refract a dynamic rainbow-y light show! They’re right at your fingertips while having a safe, awe-inspiring kayak adventure with those who share your enthusiasm for unique experiences.

We had a great date night here. We took the later 10:00 tour to make sure it would be dark enough. While waiting around to get on the kayaks and go you will get eaten up by mosquitoes if you do not have good spray so put it on before you arrive. We saw a lot of luminescence right away and it was very relaxing just being out on the calm waters that late.

Great trip with a very personable and knowledgeable guide, Joe, who introduced us to a couple manatees near the launch site, as we took off. Temperature was perfect, water was very still, and sunset was beautiful. Joe was a font of knowledge, explaining bioluminescence, among other things. Only disappointment was a lack of color in the water--toward the end of the two hours, we could see much white sparkling water as we ran our hands through the water; however, the only other colors were in the little critters (ctenophores) we captured with nets. Whenever one was caught, it turned blue, and it was fascinating to examine them all together in the bottle in which Joe collected our catch. A very worthwhile experience!

This tour met our every expectation and we had a great guide who made it better. Brian, an excellent steward of Florida's eco lab, showed his experience right away. He approached us as soon as we parked. And, looking at the rough waters, suggested we go to another location 5 minutes away where the waters were more calm. We were thrilled to learn we had an alternative to the intimidating conditions we arrived at because the outer edges of a hurricane had given an extra churn to the currents on the coast. The waters were perfect at the alternative location. Brian immediately put us at ease and added continuous educational commentary throughout the trip. And he was funny. We think he might be ready for stand-up comedy. He made it a hands-on experience by capturing bioluminescent comb jelly in a net and letting us hold them. An added bonus in the darkness of night kayaking was the brilliant star-gazing. We went to explore the waters, but the sky competed for our attention. We didn't know whether to look up or down.
