Comb Jelly Bioluminescence Kayak Tour

Overview
In the cooler Florida months, bioluminescent Comb Jellies congregate in the protected waters of the Indian River Lagoon. Living in the most bio-diverse estuary in North America, Comb Jellies are clear, glob-like creatures that, despite their name, do not sting! So as you paddle the calm waters laced with mangroves and palm trees, you can catch and hold these gentle glowing creatures. They're right at your fingertips while having a safe, awe-inspiring kayak adventure with those who share your enthusiasm for new and unique experiences.

In addition to the stars, the myriad of protected wildlife around you, and the Comb Jelly’s bioluminescence, their “ribs” are lined with cilia that they use to propel themselves, so when you cast a flashlight on them just right, they’ll also refract a dynamic rainbow-y light show! They’re right at your fingertips while having a safe, awe-inspiring kayak adventure with those who share your enthusiasm for unique experiences.

This was such a fun thing to do! Our boys (13 & 11) had a great time scooping up and touching the jellies and the kayaking was relaxing and not strenuous. Very cool to kayak at night. Our guide was patient and informative. Definitely recommend doing this in the winter (great temperatures!) vs in the summer not only for the cooler temps but the fact that you can scoop up and touch the jellies vs seeing the glow from the plankton. Bugs still found us though, despite spray!!

The clouds cleared and the stars shone bright as Bob our guide took us on a magical tour. He pointed out constellations and local sights with a fantastically bright pointer as dolphins swam around us and night herons kept up company. Comb jellies were easy to spot and there was still some dinoflagellates even though it was past season. Thank you for the awesome experience! We will do it again!

As an inexperienced kayaker, it was so easy. The glowing jellyfish were everywhere and the glowing dinoflagellates were still in season, so wooshing your hands in the water created a blue glow. The tour guide was very sweet and informative.
