Comb Jelly Bioluminescence Kayak Tour

Overview
In the cooler Florida months, bioluminescent Comb Jellies congregate in the protected waters of the Indian River Lagoon. Living in the most bio-diverse estuary in North America, Comb Jellies are clear, glob-like creatures that, despite their name, do not sting! So as you paddle the calm waters laced with mangroves and palm trees, you can catch and hold these gentle glowing creatures. They're right at your fingertips while having a safe, awe-inspiring kayak adventure with those who share your enthusiasm for new and unique experiences.

In addition to the stars, the myriad of protected wildlife around you, and the Comb Jelly’s bioluminescence, their “ribs” are lined with cilia that they use to propel themselves, so when you cast a flashlight on them just right, they’ll also refract a dynamic rainbow-y light show! They’re right at your fingertips while having a safe, awe-inspiring kayak adventure with those who share your enthusiasm for unique experiences.

This was our first experience with night kayaking so we do not have a comparison. It was just out of season for the Bioluminescence but the beginning of the Comb Jelly season. I really appreciated the knowledge based of our tour guide, Brian. He was very efficient (knowing the goal was to optimize our 1.5 hours on the water coming to find the Comb Jellies) and open to questions. We had a beautiful night which helped! I was so impressed with his knowledge base, and he had a fun sense of humor in presenting what he knew:) We had some "space" to explore in designated areas (but not to far) and a few times he "collected" the group to provide information and show the Comb Jellies he had temporarily collected. He was a good representative for EcoTourism as I felt like we had the full interactive experience and learned so much which is an important goal when I have an adventure with my family. All gear was provided and the access /location (Kiwanis Park in Merritt Island) was easy from where we were staying on Cocoa Beach. If you need water you can bring your own but we did not need this based on the night, temp and length of the tour. A park restroom is available where we were. Bug spray is important as there were some little bugs that could "bite" so take the advise of the tour and wear long sleeves / pants for protection (we were November). Thank you Brian for teaching and showing us so much!

I was most impressed with the bioluminescence. My wife and son loved the manatees the most. Booking, directions and communication were excellent. Our guide was great. I want to do it again.

I had a fantastic time with A Day Away Kayak tours. The Bioluminescence is just amazing in the Manatee Bay. With the clear kayaks, it looks like you are gliding on the back of a comet through space. In some areas of the bay it seems like there are blankets of stars all around, and the mullet fish resemble meteorites when they jump out of the water. It is an out of this world experience. The crew are all very professional, and knowledgeable. They kept us at ease, while showing us some extraordinary sights. I would definitely do this again. Its good for any age group.
