What To Expect
1
Exit Glacier
This is where your Glacier Hiking Adventure takes place. The hike up the mountain is approximately 1.5 miles, with 1,500 feet of elevation gain - this is the most physically exerting part of the trip. This is the part of the trip that requires the overall rating to be Strenuous. 8-Hour Tour: The 8-hour tour departs at 8:00am and returns at 4:00pm. The whole tour will last about 8 hours in total, with the possibility of spending upwards of 2 to 4 hours on the ice! The "ice-time" all depends on how long the hike up the mountains takes as a group. We do not rush any part of this trip, and the group will move together at a comfortable pace. *The 8-hr tour offers a more relaxed/flexible pace with more rest breaks, if needed.

Kenai Fjords National Park
At the edge of the Kenai Peninsula lies a land where the ice age lingers. Nearly 40 glaciers flow from the Harding Icefield, Kenai Fjords’ crowning feature. Wildlife thrives in icy waters and lush forests around this vast expanse of ice. Native Alutiiq relied on these resources to nurture a life entwined with the sea.

Very safe and beautiful day on a glacier. Kyle and Robin carried the gear and a great lunch. Got us geared up and taught us how to use crampons. Turning a steep sheet of ice into an easily navigated terrain!

This trip was just plain fantastic! I think the trip is not for everyone as the company, Kenai Backcountry Adventures, considers the effort strenuous. The hike to the glacier could be deemed steep in some place, but totally do-able. Our guide took us up at a casual pace and that was great. Now for the glacier. Apparently, this glacier is different than most in that the hiker must wear crampons (provided by the outfitter); this glacier portion is most definitely not casual. The glacier is melting around the edges so the entrance had some narrow paths that were challenging for those with a fear of heights. But this portion is where our guide truly excelled! He was patient and encouraging, lending a hand when needed. Isaac was the best! We hiked all the way across the glacier, a feat that is not often accomplished. We saw into crevasses and moulins (spelling?)...very exciting! In addition, Isaac explained a lot about how glaciers work and how they move. I can't say enough about how wonderful this trip was. If you are considering hiking Exit Glacier, you simply must use this copy...they are the best!
