What To Expect
1
Exit Glacier
This is where your Glacier Hiking Adventure takes place. The hike up the mountain is approximately 1.5 miles, with 1,500 feet of elevation gain - this is the most physically exerting part of the trip. This is the part of the trip that requires the overall rating to be Strenuous. 8-Hour Tour: The 8-hour tour departs at 8:00am and returns at 4:00pm. The whole tour will last about 8 hours in total, with the possibility of spending upwards of 2 to 4 hours on the ice! The "ice-time" all depends on how long the hike up the mountains takes as a group. We do not rush any part of this trip, and the group will move together at a comfortable pace. *The 8-hr tour offers a more relaxed/flexible pace with more rest breaks, if needed.

Kenai Fjords National Park
At the edge of the Kenai Peninsula lies a land where the ice age lingers. Nearly 40 glaciers flow from the Harding Icefield, Kenai Fjords’ crowning feature. Wildlife thrives in icy waters and lush forests around this vast expanse of ice. Native Alutiiq relied on these resources to nurture a life entwined with the sea.

The Exit Glacier hike was incredible. My family and I (wife, 21 year old daughter, and 14 year old son) wanted something special and a little more exciting than the glacial cruise. Well we found it, this "most day hike" was incredible, we were outfitted with a nice waterproof backpack and gear (about 10 pounds with lunch). There was a mile and a half up the mountain to a good starting point on the glacier. We were given additional "training" putting on, and adjusting, the crampons, harness, and helmet. The guides, Isaac and Todd, were very helpful, and gave as much, or as little, assistance as needed. Then they explained how to use the gear and how we should proceed and we were off. This was my first time using crampons (two inch spikes that attach to your boots and stick you to the ice) they were awesome. I never felt like I was going to slip and each step was solid even when walking over rivulets of melting ice. We hiked about a mile around the glacier, had lunch on the ice, explored some ice holes and other features. We were give adequate time to take photos, and all questions were answered. We hiked in a large loop and returned to the start to remove the gear. Everyone seemed to have a great time. I know my family and I did and this seems to be the story we all love to tell.

Kenai Backcountry adventures was a professional company with very experienced guides. They communicated with me well prior to the process and I was impressed to see all the gear they provided. We arrived to the meeting spot in the morning and were greeted by friendly and knowledgeable guides, Isaac and Todd! The others in the group arrived and we got settled with safety and gear check. The guides made sure everyone felt safe. Some hikers were faster then others, but no one was left behind. I could tell that safety was very important to the company, which is turn made me feel very safe! Once we got to the glacier, which took a couple hours of uphill hiking, we were suited up with our gear, crampons (not the yaktraks I use in Colorado, but real spikes), helmet, harness, and trekking poles. Everyone was assisted in putting on the gear and then we began hiking on the ice. It felt so awesome to be on this huge glacier, knowing that everyday there is different. We had lunch on the ice and were able to take a few pictures when we stopped. The guides taught us all so much and made everyone feel comfortable. I can't speak highly enough about our adventure that day and would recommend this to anyone with a moderate level of hiking experience. We were back to the car by 3:30pm and had one amazing experience on our day in Kenai Fjords National Park. Also for the company, Isaac and Todd were both extremely impressive guides! I hope that they are well taken care of at this company, because they made the trip for all of us! FYI- you cannot do this hike on your own, it requires permits to hike on the ice, so this was not something you can just go do. Thanks to Kenai Backcountry adventures for provided this once in a lifetime experience!

Based on other reviews I knew my family would enjoy this glacier hike. But I had no idea how much of an exciting adventure to expect. Pleasing teenagers is tough. We absolutely loved our time with Kyle and Todd. Both guys were so helpful and taught us a lot about glaciers, bears and all things about Alaska. I highly recommend using Kenai Backcountry Adventures while visiting Seward! I’m hoping to come back and booking more adventures with KBA!
