Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio
In 1889 Wright completed the construction of a small two-story residence in Oak Park on the Western edges of Chicago. The building was the first over which Wright exerted complete artistic control. Designed as a home for his family, the Oak Park residence was a site of experimentation for the young architect during the twenty-year period he lived there. Wright revised the design of the building multiple times, continually refining ideas that would shape his work for decades to come.

Fans of the uniquely American architect FLW will certainly enjoy this tour. Alex, our guide, was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Be sure to walk the neighborhood, with its many examples of FLW homes, and make your way to Unity Temple, another great example of his work. Oak Park is easily accessible by subway, a 30 minute ride from downtown Chicago. Many Europeans here the day I visited, tours on tape are available in several languages.

Unfortunately your website gives incomplete instruction. I didn’t know when I paid for my ticket that I didn’t have a reservation for the tour and other discrepancies. I didn’t go and would like a refund.

Educational, interesting and enjoyable are the best ways to describe this attraction. About 7 years ago we went to Barcelona and really dove into Guadi, so here in Chicago, it seemed appropriate to see the inspiration and work of Frank Lloyd Wright. Let me say I am not the biggest fan of Prairie School, but I am more impressed by it after this visit. I will say one thing, I do love that FLW chose to pursue an American design as opposed to copying European designs. As for the attraction, it is really good because you see the inspiration and evolution of the design and because the guides are very knowledgeable and very good about relating the information to guest. The original house was not really a Prairie design. He did go back an add features but it is the expansion portions of the house that really show the evolution of the design and the incorporation of new technology. Two of the things I loved were the way FLW dealt with space and windows. You see his signature of creating an intimate space within a larger space. Also you other ways space is used like the master bathroom where a small recess area becomes a 3-D picture. The second aspect is the way FLW uses light in windows and the geometrical patterns in the windows he became famous for. The house is really neat including the enclosed foyer that included a tree. However, my favorite part may have been the office as it incorporated the full FLW style including the geometric use of light. As I write, I realize that I really like the interior; it is the exterior where you can't find the front door that is the part I least like. With that said this really is a great visit if you are in Chicago. Also buy the map and walk a couple of blocks to see so many of his designs. Again very interesting and enjoyable and you will learn a lot.
