Frankly Charleston Morning Walking Tour

Overview
TOUR REFLECT

The truthful acknowledgment of African American contributions to these United States of America since its founding, which is still in limbo or in denial compared to the racism that is wide spread throughout this country for the sake of its southern heritage, in step with keeping it a tradition? Why can’t Americans get with the time?

We break down the other Charleston and the stereo typical mind set of the institution of slavery in this country or shall I say in the Low Country Charles Towne. Were we GULLAH? Or were we AFRICANS? What was the reward for not running? How wealthy were the free People of Color?

Absolutely superlative tour. Franklin is passionate - always important in a storyteller - and tremendously knowledgeable about the history of Charleston - which is inextricably the history of slavery. His original research into the forgotten locations of what should be widely-known African-American markers is fascinating, and a testament to his perseverance and passion. Could not recommend more highly. Everyone should take this tour.

This tour was probably the highlight of our week in Charleston. Franklin is passionate and knowledgeable about his subject matter -- qualities that are essential in a tour guide. He's open to questions and savvy enough to pause in the shade for his narration (and to provide ice-cold water for all his guests)! I learned things on this tour that I never would have heard from the "standard" tour guides. Franklin is really rounding out the traditional stories about Charleston history, pointing out small (and large) things that shed light on the city's checkered past. I especially liked the ways that he focused on the agency of the city's African-Americans -- how they built their own culture and community right in the shadow of slavery and the Jim Crow era. I would take any tour that Franklin offers -- and I hope he continues to expand his offerings! Tremendous tour guide and representative of Charleston history!

This is a must-do tour in Charleston. Franklin is an amazing story teller that draws you into the history. Starting at the Charleston gate and iron design, he makes this come alive with the description of the meaning behind the upside down heart, tight curls, fish, and other markings. The auction stones, the lives behind the homes, the slave traders, the skilled & artesian Slaves and freemen, the boundaries of the Wragge district and the lives beyond the other Charleston is fascinating. Not too much walking, more observing and interacting. Tremendous insight into black lives over the decades.
