When taking the Great American Road Trip, any chance to avoid getting in the car is to be gratefully taken. No need to find parking either. The train takes 2 hours each way to and from the Canyon and does include a Cafe Car which takes only CASH. Each car has a single restroom and water is provided by the cup. Tina (our guide) provided information, answered questions, and generally kept us entertained. Musical entertainment is provided. My teenaged granddaughter thoroughly enjoyed herself. She rated the train ride the best part of the trip, outside the "big ditch" itself. Keep in mind to have cell phones charged to the max beforehand as there are no charging outlets on the train. I purchased the tickets as part of a two day hotel-train package. I would STRONGLY RECOMMEND ordering the tickets by phone and requesting a PRINT copy of the confirmation letter. I ordered on-line from the hotel and never received the confirmation letter. There was an error in the amount of time spent at the Grand Canyon which I didn't catch until on-site.

This is the number one excursion that I wanted to take while vacationing in this area. My husband and I arrived in Williams (from Las Vegas) and stayed at the Railway Hotel for the convenience of catching the train the following morning. I had purchased tickets online and when we went to exchange our vouchers for the actual tickets we upgraded to a dome car to have a more scenic view. The set-up for getting tickets and boarding the train is all fairly flawless, they have a system that works well. The train car that we were in “The Desert View” had recently been restored and was nicely done with comfortable seats. The cars have hostesses that are helpful and informative. Ours were excellent. They also have a couple of musicians that come through to entertain the group. To my surprise and disappointment there really is not much to see during the trip. The upgrade to the dome car is a waste of money except for the fact that I can now say that I have ridden in one. Once the train arrives at the Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim, it is a short walk across the tracks to reach our destination, the view of The Grand Canyon. Awesome! The whole train experience was nice and saved us some driving time in the car but if, like myself, you are expecting a beautiful view of the canyon itself from the train, or for that matter, a beautiful view of anything, it was disappointing. We would definitely just make the drive in a car next time.

There were 4 of us in our group and 3 of us had never been to the Grand Canyon. We chose to take the train to add to our experience and I'm glad we did. There is a Wild West type show before the train leaves. It's cheesy, but funny and cute and worth catching. The train ride takes about 2 1/2 hours each way so it's not a quick trip, but the view is nice for the most part and there is a host on each train car. Our host, Cameron, was great. He was informative, upbeat, entertaining and genuine. Everyone seemed to love him, including our group. He told us lots of interesting facts along the way and was full of information. There are also musicians that come through the train cars and sing and there is a snack car that has beer, wine and assorted snacks. Once at the Grand Canyon we had just over 3 hours so if you are looking to do a decent hike this probably isn't for you, as you won't have enough time. I don't want to spoil what happens on the way back, but it was really cute and fun. Book a ride on the train and find out what happens!
