Yes, taking the luxury dome car wasn't cheap, but what an experience! Unlike a previous reviewer who was disappointed and had trouble with basic English and grammar in describing the railway's food service, we found the breakfast buffet along with the afternoon cheese & cracker and veggie platter spread to be a veritable feast. Brian was the car's steward and made sure that every comfort was provided. Entertainment with acoustic guitar (in each direction, round trip) added to the spirit of enjoying the ride, not least of which was the beautifully restored 1950s-era dome car that looked brand new. We also signed up for the 90-minute bus tour that brought us to several lookout points along the south rim. The driver/guide was friendly and knowledgeable, and, of course, the views were magnificent. Seeing the Grand Canyon was a Bucket List item, and we took care of it in style.

The only reason I’m giving 3 stars is because the staff was super friendly. However, I’m NOT happy about the amount of money we paid for First Class. I attached a photo, but we were expecting much more space and a larger window which was nice considering we had our 12 week old baby with us (would not let me attach the screenshot from their website that had a TOTALLY different seating arrangement for First Class). It was expensive and not a great view or scenery for that matter. I wish we would have just drove.

I have been to the Grand Canyon several times, hiking in the Canyon 5 or 6 times, so it wasn't new to me. This time we were visiting relatives in Arizona and decided to do something different for a quick visit to the Canyon. We drove to Williams and took the 9:30am train to Grand Canyon Village. It was a 2 1/4 hour ride on smooth tracks through beautiful scenery. The train station at the Canyon is a flight of steps below the El Tovar hotel, and within easy walking distance to other lodging. Or adventure included an overnight at the El Tovar before returning on the 3:30pm train the next day. However, there were several parties on board who had never been to the Canyon and they were just going up for the day. That gave them a good three hours to walk along the rim. On board we had drinks and pastries on the way up, and drinks and snacks on the way back. A big plus, you don't have to fight traffic or hunt for a parking space. This was a very enjoyable way to do an overnight at one of America's grandest destinations.
