Hale Hoaloha Luau at the Mauna Lani

Overview
The luau is held at the beautiful Mauna Lani, Auberge Resort at Kalāhuipuaʻa, which is a historical area where ancient Hawaiians mastered the art of aquaculture and where King Kamehameha came to recuperate and work in the fishponds.

Guests are welcomed with a traditional Oli (chant) in preparation for preliminary activities with the cast. After the activities, watch as the pig is taken out of the traditional imu pit before it is prepared for the Hawaiian buffet.

The program is capped off by a performance of traditional and modern Hula dances, along with the spectacular Samoan Siva Afi (fire knife dance).

Hale Hoaloha Luau at the Mauna Lani
The Hale Hoaloha Lūʻau is a celebration of the beauty and stories of the land area known as Kalāhuipuaʻa. Considered the “piko” (center) of the majestic mountains of Haleakalā, Kohala, Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and Hualālai, the Mauna Lani is a special place to all who have the privilege of enjoying its beauty. Traditionally, lūʻaus are important family celebrations with a feast of favorite foods, sharing of moʻolelo (story telling), mele (music) and hula. Hale Hoaloha Lūʻau brings together all of these while sharing Mauna Laniʻs majestic history and the true essence of aloha, ʻohana (family) and kuleana (responsibility) with everyone in attendance.

Summary: We wish we could rate this better - however there was allot of chaos and the dancing/entertainment/story telling just didn't cut it for us. Very rushed. Positive Valet parking was great! We were staying at one of the Mauni Lani Point Condos so drove over. Check in was good. Seating was nicely arranged so most if not all people had a view of the show. Seating was handled okay but it wasn't clear where / how to order drinks. Once our hostess stopped by, it became evident. Most the food was quite tasty. But since we initially missed the seafood table until after the great mass moved at once to get their meals, we can't comment on those menu items. Our drinks were nicely crafted - and you actually taste the liquor (unlike some other Luaus) Needs work It felt like everything was very rushed with a bit chaotic. When it came time to eat, no one advised guests where tables were and what was on them. We were aware of the menu but had no idea where to find some of the food. Furthermore - it was a free for all - everyone got up to get their dinners at the same time. No staging tables a couple at a time to avoid crowds and people jockeying to get to the food first. It's not fun to deal with rage and people pushing to get to the food - there was plenty of food for all. But chaos caused short tempers for some. The show was not the greatest we've seen - it was okay. Not bad / not good. It was nothing special and not worth the high cost. As we are in Hawaii (Oahu, the Big Island, Maui and or Kauai) at least once a year, and try out different Luau's, we would not go back to this one on the Big Island. We would rate this a B-. With a little better organization, communication and a more authentic dance / entertainment / costumes / story telling - this could be a superb Luau.

This was a great luau. You had the opportunity to see the cooked pig get dug from its cooking pit, then gave thanks. The food was amazing and the story of the 5 mountains, along with the Tahitian and Samoan history brought you closer to Ohana. The parking is free and you will receive a lei upon entry to the luau. Be prepared to pay $$$ for an alcoholic drink. There is no “bad” seating, you can here and see everything.
