Wow- who would have known that our second trip with Hoonah Whale Tours would be even more fabulous than our first! I am not sure we could have had more perfect conditions. The herring was running- and the pod of Humpback whales was enjoying their fill. We saw lunge feeding, multiple times saw bubble net feeding, and then had about 10 humpback whales swim in front of the boat. The three hours are fantastic. Most of the ship run whale tours are only two hours. That extra hour allows for time to enjoy the whales that much longer, or time to travel to them. We didn't have to go far though, the first whale was spotted within 15 minutes. Jordan is an expert at maneuvering the boat so that we had great views. We stayed within easy viewing distance for most of the three hours, and sometimes the whales swam closer to us! It was Jordan's birthday too! We enjoyed his wife's blueberry muffins (with blueberries picked by Jordan.) The water was smooth, and the intimate size of the boat really allows for a quieter and more personalized experience. Make sure you book your trip with Hoonah Whale Tours- if there are whales to be found, Jordan will find them for you. Don't be afraid of taking this smaller boat- your experience will be so much richer! We can't wait to go back again and take the family with us.

Found this local company (Husband & Wife Team) online (who is a local fisherman by trade) and they did not disappoint! What an incredible adventure! Saw a huge pod of whales, most likely following a school of fish and bubble feeding, right from the start. Amazing! Only 4 people on our excursion which left us plenty of elbow room to take pics. If we got chilled, we stepped into cabin to warm up w/ coffee and home-made Alaskan berry muffins. Very foggy & our captain did his best to work around fog. He also stated that all whale boat captains radio each other to provide the location of all whale sightings. He said it was a professional courtesy. So, why pay more to be crowded on a big boat w/ tons of people! We witnessed these boats leaning heavily over to one side or the other whenever the mass of tourists would gather for their whale photo-op. How scary! Because of our boat's small size & reverberation in the aluminum hull boat, we were able to get close enough to hear the whales communicating w/ their assorted "moaning calls". Remarkably Eerie! But beautiful! Why go w/ a Big Company when you can have professional service w/ a very personal touch?! I'll definitely go again when we return to Alaska!

We had a fantastic tour with Joardan in August 2016, and we have just booked with him again for this May! This small boat is clean and warm. We enjoyed homemade muffins made by his wife. We happened upon a very foggy day in Icy Strait. Joardan made the trip magical anyway. We enjoyed listening to the whales as they came up for air. Due to the small size of the boat and the limited passengers, he was able to respond to the environment easily, and to make sure his passengers got the experience they were looking for. It was a very smooth ride, don't let the fact that this is a smaller boat scare you off! My husband, a photographer, loved this experience due to the quietness (since there are so few passengers) and the ability to easily move around the boat for the best shots.

Thank you for the review! We had a couple foggy days and as you were out on the boat I had my fingers crossed that it would clear. Even though it didnā€™t really, Iā€™m so happy you guys still had a a great time. Canā€™t wait to have you again in May! Last May was one of the best months we had for whale activity all summer!
