Hoonah Whale Tours is a family owned whale watching company that operates out of Hoonah, AK. When taking this tour you will be on a private 6 passenger boat tour that goes out into Icy Strait. During the tour will you get the chance to see all sorts of Southeast Alaska wildlife, including bald eagles, sea lions, sea otters, sometimes brown bear and orcas and of course humpback whales! Our tours last between 3 and 3.5 hours and we guarantee you'll see whales or you money back. The boat is a 6 passenger catamaran, with a walk around deck, heated cabin, and a bathroom on board. We also provide snacks and beverages.

When out on our whale watching tour you will be in Icy Strait (body of water) You will get to see humpback whales (guaranteed!), sea lion, sea otter, and bald eagles. You even have the chance of seeing brown bear along the beaches, orcas and puffins flying by.

We were originally booked with Hoonah Travel and Adventures, but received a text that they had overbooked and we were to meet Mariah with Hoonah Whale Tours instead. We are so happy that it ended up this way. Mariah drove us from Icy Straight Point to the dock at Hoonah - only a few miles away; she was very informative and gave us some insight on what it's like to live there with a young family full time. We were met by her husband Jordan at the dock; as described in other reviews his boat accommodates 6 passengers - there was no competing for viewing areas. We were able to see Orca and Humpback whales - we got great pics of a Humpback breaching out of the water. Jordan is also a local fisherman and a very competent captain. He will take the time to find and follow whales for you to be able to see. You cannot go wrong booking with these guys!

The young couple running this business are fantastic. They are very welcoming and engaging from the very first instance they meet you. Excellent whale tour! This is not a rushed experience like some excursions I have been on. Jordan takes you right to the whales, and allows you plenty opportunity to get some amazing shots. I love the idea of this small boat, so you don't have to maneuver around lots of people to get some of the best pictures and video of whales in action. We went out on September 5th, and I was worried about it maybe being late in the season. Boy was I wrong! When Maraiya drove us from the cruise ship she immediately pointed out several whales in the harbor right next to the road. There were about 8 to 10 boats out that day whale watching, and the next thing I knew they were all gone, and Jordan still had us out there for what seemed like an additional 45 minutes of breathtaking whale action. Just can't recommend them enough. I would add a picture if I had one from the experience, but I took all video that day and was able to capture some great sites as well as sound.

WOW! We had a fantastic trip with Jordan! I've seen whales close up on other trips; but this trip was far beyond anything I could have expected. We saw four whales bubble-net fishing several times very close to the boat. One time the whales made their the bubble-net including our boat within the bubbles! Now that was close. I know Jordan can't make things happen, but he did everything he could and showed his knowledge of where whales might be. I'm ready to go again. Bring your video camera.
