During our Alaska trip we've seen a couple of mighty glaciers from afar but this time we would actually set foot on one: the mighty Herbert glacier. We checked in a Coastal Helicopters base, got a short safety briefing and then went to our helicopter piloted by Robbie. A couple of minutes later we were up in the air and enjoyed a birds eye view of Juneau. When we saw the glacier from a distance you were stunned by its sheer size but nothing could prepare us for the feeling we had when actually landing on it. The dimensions became bigger and bigger, almost too big to wrap your mind around it. What amazed us the most was the blue colour of the fresh glacier ice. A small stream of water was running on top of the glacier and we sampled a few sips - icy cold freshness in its purest form. On our walk on top of the glacier we were shown some deep crevasses you better stay clear of. How big they were you only realised when standing 10 Meters from it. Unbelievable! Robbie explained a lot about the glacier, gladly took pictures with the whole family and was extremely helpful the whole trip, a real pleasure to have him with us! I could have stayed there all day but after 30 minutes or so we had to head back to the Helicopter, posed for a group picture and then flew back to Coastal helicopter base. i'm really glad i took a lot of pictures because otherwise i might have thought it was all just a beautiful dream. What a great country and even better people that live there. Thank you from Germany for an outstanding day!
