We booked the Juneau Helicopter tour and glacier walk online instead of through the ship. We had such an amazing experience! It was, by far, our favorite experience from our trip, both on land and sea. The pilot was fantastic! He let us explore the glacier, stop for photos along the way, and even took group pictures of us all. This is a trip that you don't want to miss!

We booked online and skipped the shore excursion price. Coastal was great to work with. They had a van waiting right off the dock and it was a short ride to the airport. After weighing in, they give you some spiked boots and lock your stuff away (keep your cameras on you). Our pilot was fantastic, he gave us a smooth ride on a very rainy/cloudy day, and was very knowledgeable about the area. The glacier was a blast to walk on, we were able to drink glacier water, see some huge cracks, and goats and bears on the mountainside. If you are afraid of riding in a helicopter, the pilots do a great job of keeping the flight smooth. This was far better than seeing the glaciers from ground level. We brought young kids ages 4 and up, and they loved it as well.

We enjoyed the hour-long tour outside Juneau (30 minutes in the helicopter, 30 minutes on the glacier) with Michael as our pilot and guide. He talked about the science behind glaciers as we soared above the lakes, mountains and ice and took great care of us on the glacier on which he deftly landed the copter. We cramp-oned around, cupped and drank water from a crevasse -- the best, coldest water you will ever taste -- and my boys also did pushups over a small crevasse. One caveat: if the well-meaning kid at the helicopter office tells you temperature in town (75 that day) is the same on the glacier, don't believe it. It was windy on the ice and quite chilly, especially for those in T-shirts. Still, a great, great trip.
