What To Expect
1
Kenai Fjords National Park
In Kenai Fjords National Park, over half of the landmass is covered by the enormous Harding Icefield, a thousand-foot block of ice that dates back to the last Ice Age. The Harding spills out in all directions in the form of glaciers. Some stretch northwest into rugged hills of the Kenai Peninsula. Others—five of them, to be exact—reach as far as the sea along the craggy coast of the Gulf of Alaska.
2
Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge
Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge is comprised of 2,400 islands, headlands, rocks, islets, spires and reefs and is known for its abundance of seabirds.

We took the Alaskan Coastal Train to Seward and hopped on the KFT (Kenai Fords) 6-hour Classic Wildlife & Glacier Cruise on the Callisto Voyager with Captain Steve Martin. My mom is disabled (no wheelchair but lower mobility) and the staff was excellent. Shuttle pickup from the train and checkin/boarding was smooth with little to no wait. Captain Steve Martin has the name of a comedian, the voice of Clint Eastwood, and the daring of Evil Kneival. His maneuvering right up to the islands, over and over, was what made this trip so fantastic! Then you get this husky, soft voice telling you about puffin behavior which makes you want to whistle the theme of The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. We saw a humpback whale, seals, sea lions, puffins, gulls, common mutters, the Ailik Glacier and huge parts of it falling in the water, and just breathtaking landscape. We also passed as close as we could to the huge hunks of Bear Glacier floating in the water. The bathrooms were very clean the entire six hours. Lunch, especially for a vegetarian, was pretty low end (hummus and lettuce wrap), chips, granola bar. But the hit chocolate chip cookies at the end of the cruise were SO awesome. The crew was SO friendly, and a special shout out to Ally, the Galley Girl, for her never-ending smile and enthusiasm. Ally even brought in some glacier ice to make drinks for the kids & anyone wanting one! Unloading and shuttle to train was also smooth. They do cut it close, but don’t worry - they have this covered. Bring jackets. Bring binoculars. Bring extra snacks (they sell too at reasonable prices). Tip the crew. (We left $10 each). HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. X1000.

As part of a 7-day Deluxe Alaska Sampler train tour via Alaska Railroad we took recently, we went on a Kenai Fjord tour on the Callisto Voyager. I have forgotten our captain's name, but she REALLY knows her stuff as far as navigation and getting you close to the sights. The weather was outstanding as far as visibility and fairly smooth water. The ship is modern, well-appointed and clean. The staff was outstanding, making sure that every need was addressed and doing whatever they could to ensure that everyone was having a good time. (Unfortunately, one poor fella spent the bulk of the trip greener than the Grinch but the crew did what they could to make him as comfortable as possible). We would HIGHLY recommend taking this multi-hour tour if you're interested in seeing the scenery and wildlife and hearing the sounds in this spectacular area!

We had an amazing time with Kenai Fjords tours!!! Our captain, Tim, was awesome and pointed out endless wildlife - orcas, humpback whales, sea lions, harbor seals, bald eagles, jellyfish, black bears, native birds, sea otters. We had ample time to stop and enjoy all of these creatures each encounter we had. We even saw the million dollar shot of an orca jumping all the way out of the water!!!!! So amazing. Sarah was an awesome deck mate and took photos of everyone by the Aialik glacier - she made sure a portion of the boat deck was clear so no one else was in the background of your photo. Lunch was chicken wraps with choice of dressing, sea salt chips, nature’s valley granola bar, and Andes mint chocolate. At the Aialik glacier, the deck mates fished out some glacier ice chunks from the water and offered a $6 Alaskan sunrise drink (orange juice, grapefruit juice, vodka, and a chunk of glacial ice!!!) - such a cool great and photo opp. I’d suggest taking advantage of purchasing the $8.95 souvenir thermos with endless refills on the boat (self serve coffee, tea, hot chocolate, cider, sodas). One suggestion would be for the captain to stop talking during the animal encounters because near the sea lions, we were trying to hear them bark/roar and he was talking over them on the intercom. Thank you Kenai Fjords!! We will never forget our experience.
