Luau Kalamaku with Buffet Dinner & Show

Overview
Welcoming guests to Kauai since 2007, Luau Kalamaku is Hawaii's only luau show performed “in-the-round,” offering optimal views of the stage. Witness the unearthing of the pig from the traditional imu (underground oven) and enjoy a hula lesson. A craft fair featuring unique items by local artisans awaits on the sprawling lawn. Feast on a delicious buffet of local and familiar favorites and enjoy a Mai Tai from the open bar. The 45-minute main show tells the amazing story of the ancient Hawaiian legend of Kalamaku “child of the new land." Through laughter, fear, seduction and fire, a new legacy is created, born from the cherished seeds of their ancestors. The theatrical luau show culminates with a fantastic fire dream featuring fire poi balls and traditional fire knife dancing.

My husband and I loved this luau. The food was very good and the show was spectacular! We came into Kauai during the tail end of a storm but that didn’t matter here because the facility is covered. The little shops are set up outside where you can buy various items from local artists before the luau starts and there is a professional photographer where you can get an awesome photo of you and your loved ones for a fee. If you’ve never been to a luau, I would definitely recommend this one for sure!!

I have been to Hawaii six separate times and have been to at least 4 different luaus. This one, on Kuaui, was pretty entertaining and did have things to do beforehand such as take a train trip or visit artisans and artists. However, the food was mediocre and the seating is assigned, which I always dislike. There were 10 people per table and while my table was in a great location, some were much farther back from the stage near bars or band. If I was seated farther back, it may be difficult to say all the action on the stage, as it was pretty small. I would recommend this luau, just be wary of seating arrangements. Very busy with a lot of people also. Only Tuesday and Friday I believe.

This was the only Luau we attended, so I have nothing to compare it to. We knew in advance that there are a lot of people in attendance, so our expectations for food were pretty low. My daughter was so pleased to get her lei greeting that she didn’t get at the airport (thanks TV for setting unrealistic expectations). The wahine get flower leis and the kane get shell leis. There were several arts and craft stands that you could peruse before the show. The buffet had multiple lines and serving stations so it went quickly, and the food was surprisingly tasty given the large amount of people to feed. There were a decent variety of options to accommodate most diets. I eat mostly vegetarian but wanted to try the kalua pork and it was the tastiest item on the buffet. The taro unfortunately lacked flavor...I’ll stick to eating them in chip form. The desserts were fine. The show itself was well done. It was a theatrical experience with not only great dancing, but stunning effects. They did a great job of extending the performance beyond the center stage. It was a really great night out.
