Manatees/Sunset/Bioluminescence Tour

Overview
Experience everything the wildlife refuge has to offer with three distinct experiences packed into one three-hour tour! Launch your kayak in the daylight and surround yourself with Florida’s most-loved endangered species, West Indian Manatees! Sit back while the gentle giants roll, sniff, and nuzzle all around you. Dolphins are also active this time of day as they wrangle their dinner in the adjacent cove.

Next, head out to Bird Island, a federally protected rookery, to watch hundreds of birds soar in overhead. Ibis, herons, egrets, pelicans, cormorants, and roseate spoonbills and more all glide in their flocks to nest for the night. Be lulled into serenity by the gently rocking kayak as the sun descends for the night in the pinks, oranges, and reds of sunset.

Finally, the tour culminates in the season’s bioluminescent experience, whether it be summer bioluminescence, winter comb jelly bioluminescence, or a star-studded moonlit sky.

What an incredible experience. Enjoying the natural habitat of so many wildlife species, the views of sunset and the full moon, and most of all our amazing guide, Jaden. What a joy he was to learn from, talk and laugh with! Excellent guide...excellent experience.

We had SUCH an amazing time on this tour with our guide Wyatt. He knew exactly where to go to see manatees and comb jellies. He was funny, cracking jokes the entire tour and extremely knowledgeable about the ecology of the area as well as the nearby Kennedy space center, launches, and astronomy. We saw a lot of manatees, a few dolphins, a ton of comb jellies, and a little bit of dinoflagellate (even though it was a bit late in the season for it). It was so cool getting to hold the comb jellies and seeing them light up in your hand. The tour was a ton of fun and we learned a lot. Highly recommend the combo tour because you get to see it all!

We did the 3 hour combo Kayak tour. The biggest thing I was looking forward to was the bioluminescent. The promotional videos looked amazing. However, Before going I did some research and found that the bio most likely would not be a vibrant as the photos/videos online were (thanks to photoshop). Also, it was towards the end of the season when we went and the moon was at a quarter (so it was a bit too bright). I went into the tour not expecting to see very much of the bio. We choose the combo tour just in case the bio was a disappointment we were able to see other things too. During the tour we were In fact able to see some bio (it was absolutely nothing like the promo videos you see online). It was still pretty neat to see. I would describe it as “little sparks” in the water. We also saw manatee and dolphins and a nice sunset. The tour guide (Dunkin) was great too. :) If I was to do it again, I would try to go when there is no moon out or when the sky is overcast. I would recommend everybody to check out the bio because it’s not something you get to see everywhere.
