Manatees/Sunset/Bioluminescence Tour

Overview
Experience everything the wildlife refuge has to offer with three distinct experiences packed into one three-hour tour! Launch your kayak in the daylight and surround yourself with Florida’s most-loved endangered species, West Indian Manatees! Sit back while the gentle giants roll, sniff, and nuzzle all around you. Dolphins are also active this time of day as they wrangle their dinner in the adjacent cove.

Next, head out to Bird Island, a federally protected rookery, to watch hundreds of birds soar in overhead. Ibis, herons, egrets, pelicans, cormorants, and roseate spoonbills and more all glide in their flocks to nest for the night. Be lulled into serenity by the gently rocking kayak as the sun descends for the night in the pinks, oranges, and reds of sunset.

Finally, the tour culminates in the season’s bioluminescent experience, whether it be summer bioluminescence, winter comb jelly bioluminescence, or a star-studded moonlit sky.

I want to first say that the kayak experience was awesome. Bob and Spencer were excellent. I really wanted to give the trip a 5 but I have to give it a 4 solely based on communication in regards to the important details. I booked my tour online which was extremely easy to do. A email confirmation was sent with important details that I was unaware of. First the location of the launch that was in the email took me to a location that was not accurate. I then repeatedly tried to contact someone to let me know where to go. She said follow the turn by turn directions. If you are not familiar with the area which I’m sure most are not they are not helpful at all. Thankfully Bob and Spencer were very patient and waited. Also my biggest disappointment was the mosquitos. We were eaten alive to the point that at times you were not able to enjoy the tour. Many of are kids had welts for days due to this. I think this should be in bold in any email received from you company. Finally a confirmation call I received the day of the trip should of included these keys factors. Clearly this is a huge issue and when you take the time to call to confirm you should verify that the guest be ware of specific things and let them know to read all the was to the bottom of the confirmation email. It just looks like a receipt and you would not think twice about looking past your payment info. I hope you consider making changes for future guests so the experience can be amazing.

This was our first kayak tour and the first time we experienced bioluminescent activity...it was incredible! Our guide, Bob, was patient, knowledgeable and funny. The scenery was peaceful and the sunset was stunning at bird island. We witnessed manatees and dolphins numerous times throughout the tour. Bob taught us a lot about the local wildlife and even shared some fun space and astronaut facts! We will definitely be back...we want to try a sunrise tour next!

My husband and I and our two friends recently signed up for the combo tour with A Day Away and could not have asked for a better experience. Our guide Bob was very friendly and knowledgeable and his punny jokes were hilarious. He catered the entire evening to our group's interests, keeping us steadily moving throughout, without us ever feeling rushed. He pointed out and explained everything from animal behavior, to plant life, to points of interest along the sky line. We loved seeing manatees glide along beside us and were blown away by the sunset birdwatching. When darkness finally arrived we were already more than satisfied with the experience and wouldn't have been upset if the bioluminescence was minimal (we knew it was still early yet for the season). Once again though, Bob didn't disappoint. He found multiple pitch-black areas for us to explore and see the dinoflagellates. Would recommend this tour to anyone visiting the area!
