Manatees/Sunset/Bioluminescence Tour

Overview
Experience everything the wildlife refuge has to offer with three distinct experiences packed into one three-hour tour! Launch your kayak in the daylight and surround yourself with Florida’s most-loved endangered species, West Indian Manatees! Sit back while the gentle giants roll, sniff, and nuzzle all around you. Dolphins are also active this time of day as they wrangle their dinner in the adjacent cove.

Next, head out to Bird Island, a federally protected rookery, to watch hundreds of birds soar in overhead. Ibis, herons, egrets, pelicans, cormorants, and roseate spoonbills and more all glide in their flocks to nest for the night. Be lulled into serenity by the gently rocking kayak as the sun descends for the night in the pinks, oranges, and reds of sunset.

Finally, the tour culminates in the season’s bioluminescent experience, whether it be summer bioluminescence, winter comb jelly bioluminescence, or a star-studded moonlit sky.

WE STARTED OUR KAYAK TOUR BY SEEING DOLPHINS BEFORE WE EVEN GOT IN! After watching the dolphins a bit we kayaked down to see the manatees. There were dolphins in that area.We saw several manatees and watched a dolphin corral a fish which became his dinner. Next up was the mangroves where we saw the resting areas and trails made by the resident gators. No one was home so we found more manatees and saw every water bird imaginable including the roseate spoonbill and glossy ibis. We watched the sun set near bird island which is a sanctuary. As the sun was setting the birds were all coming in to roost. Every tree had at least a few birds in it, including one with dozens of roseates; gorgeous! We then watched the stars come out and enjoyed hearing about the constellations and planets. As darkness grew we hunted for comb jellyfish which are really comb jellies and not jelly fish. When disturbed they light up! We had so much fun splashing around so we could see them light up. As a bonus the dino flagellates were everywhere. We were amazed as the water around our kayaks lit up. If you've never heard of these look up videos on bioluminescent bays. As we were finishing up our guide wasn't in a hurry to chase us to shore. We appreciated his great attitude and corny jokes. Ask for Bob if you want to learn a little about everything including who invented selfies. We highly recommend going with this company. Our group had 5 kayaks which was the perfect amount.

First, our tour guide Cody Rose was really great. My mom, aunt, and I had never been kayaking before and Cody was very patient and supportive....even when we toppled over, she was quick and got us back on our kayak in no time. Cody was, also, extremely knowledgeable and gave us all kinds of informative tidbits. If you’ve never been kayaking, this was a great starter tour as you don’t go to many extremely deep areas...so if you topple over (like we did) you don’t feel completely overwhelmed. The wildlife was amazing. Getting to see dolphins, comb jellies, and so many species of birds up close was breathtaking. The sunset on the open water was an amazing touch. I highly recommend the tour! Great service, info, and beautiful area.

Went on a private Mondo Combo tour with Bill. My wife and I took our children 12,10 and 7 and have had experience in kayaking at the Minnesota Lakes every summer. From the time we get got there we were well informed and felt ready to go. Bill guides us to see manatees and dolphins but more importantly gives us info on the area and information on so many animals we are seeing. We are also guided by a bird island and watch the sunset. After a short break we are able to see and catch the bioluminescent jellyfish that caused great excitement amongst the children. Bill was a great guide throughout the tour. Calm, informative and making sure we were well cared for.
