Manta Magic - Night Manta Ray Snorkel At Manta Village, Kona, Hawaii

Overview

Avoid the crowds of the other "cattle boats" in Kona, and enjoy a small-group manta ray snorkeling experience with a maximum of 12 passengers.

This tour departs from Keahou Harbor in South Kona and enjoys a short 5-minute boat ride to our snorkeling site, Manta Village.

Your Captain and snorkel guide will educate you on Kona's famous manta rays and will discuss our safe and humane approach to engaging with the gentle giants.

After entering the water, you'll hold onto our lightboard, with your feet propped up by floatation devices, as the manta rays perform a graceful ballet beneath you. The manta rays filter feed on plankton that naturally gathers at the surface just before sunset, then accumulates underneath our lights. This is an opportunity to enjoy an evening on the water and watch in amazement as the manta rays glide around and dance for you.

I randomly selected Hawaii Oceanic based on a recommendation from the Love Big Island website, and I was very pleased. We went on the moonlight manta snorkel on March 1. Yes, the parking lot was in a weird spot, but the directions on our booking were very specific. We arrived early and watched the sunset from the pier in the small boat harbor. It wasn't immediately clear, which boat we were looking for, as there were many going out, but it was well marked when it did arrive. It only takes a couple minutes to get to the snorkel site and on our way out, our guide did a great job briefing us on what would happen and what to expect. We had to hold onto a rope attached to a surfboard with a light on it and not move or kick at all. I didn't love the roughness of the water, but it was manageable for 45 minutes. Our guide was there to answer questions and give commentary the whole time. It turned out to be a great night and the manta rays were awesome, we had 3 swimming around us the whole time and at one point up to 6 of them.

First of, let me say the crew we had for the night was awesome! Micah and Chad were very nice. While this was not the first time out on the water in a boat for my husband and I, they explained everything for all the beginners which was great. Micah was so sweet and informative and boy can she swim! She pulled us around on the float to get the perfect spot, and she always talked through the whole snorkel telling us the names of the mantas if she could see their spots! I would highly recommend this experience it’s once in a lifetime! This company was great and I would highly recommend as well, it’s a little smaller then the once’s you’ll see at the bay but it felt more intimate and we liked that.
