Manta Magic - Night Manta Ray Snorkel At Manta Village, Kona, Hawaii

Overview
Avoid the crowds of the other "cattle boats" in Kona, and enjoy a small-group manta ray snorkeling experience with a maximum of 12 passengers.

This tour departs from Keahou Harbor in South Kona and enjoys a short 5-minute boat ride to our snorkeling site, Manta Village.

Your Captain and snorkel guide will educate you on Kona's famous manta rays and will discuss our safe and humane approach to engaging with the gentle giants.

After entering the water, you'll hold onto our lightboard, with your feet propped up by floatation devices, as the manta rays perform a graceful ballet beneath you. The manta rays filter feed on plankton that naturally gathers at the surface just before sunset, then accumulates underneath our lights. This is an opportunity to enjoy an evening on the water and watch in amazement as the manta rays glide around and dance for you.

We are proud to be a Green Listed company, and we take an environmentally cautious approach to our interactions with the manta rays.

If you like getting in the water and viewing the underwater marine life, you have to try this!! It's about 1.5 hours in total and times vary depending on sunset. You meet near the dock and the directions to get there are very clear. Once suited in a wetsuit, you travel about 5 minutes out into the harbour. The staff put what resembles a surf board into the water with rope handles along the side to hang onto. A large light is attached to the bottom which attracts the plankton that the mantas feed upon. You wear a mask and snorkel and put your head in the water and wait. In about 45 minutes we saw 8 manta rays, beautiful and graceful. There were other boats and groups in the water but it made it more exciting. The captain and our assistant/photographer were both friendly and helpful, which made it even more enjoyable.

We booked this tour in January and when we are arrived checked out their meeting place. Their office door had a signing saying to show up at 4:30 for the Manta Magic. We did but nobody showed up until 4:45 and then stated that they had switched the venue. The pick up spot was South Kona now at 6 pm. The original tour stated we would get dinner and a preliminary snorkel before sunset. Now we had to drive to an obscure parking lot south of Kona. No one had informed us of the change by email. They phoned our number in Canada that morning but we had arrived the day before. Then they criticized us for not having cell coverage out of country, quite costly. We arrived at the new site but had to guess where to go. We had to walk below private canoe club property to a beach, cross a boat ramp and around a building to their truck in trailer only parking. A manta ray showed up making it worthwhile but once back on shore we had to find our way on a dark night back.

Took the teens to go see some manta rays. Super friendly crew and Micah was fantastic with information and helpful tips. The sunset tour was perfect. Early enough that we were in the water just after sunset, and hardly any other boats there at that time. The manta rays were there almost on cue. We saw at least five, I believe, and they were AMAZING. They came SO close to us, it was stunningly beautiful. My daughter is 14 and a bit nervous in open water, but the guides were great at reassuring her, the wetsuits totally helped. Even once in the water, they were still making sure we were comfortable and moved us around to better positions to see the rays. All in all, this was a fantastic tour. Cannot thank the crew enough for such a great experience.
