Manta Magic - Night Manta Ray Snorkel At Manta Village, Kona, Hawaii

Overview

Avoid the crowds of the other "cattle boats" in Kona, and enjoy a small-group manta ray snorkeling experience with a maximum of 12 passengers.

This tour departs from Keahou Harbor in South Kona and enjoys a short 5-minute boat ride to our snorkeling site, Manta Village.

Your Captain and snorkel guide will educate you on Kona's famous manta rays and will discuss our safe and humane approach to engaging with the gentle giants.

After entering the water, you'll hold onto our lightboard, with your feet propped up by floatation devices, as the manta rays perform a graceful ballet beneath you. The manta rays filter feed on plankton that naturally gathers at the surface just before sunset, then accumulates underneath our lights. This is an opportunity to enjoy an evening on the water and watch in amazement as the manta rays glide around and dance for you.

Me and my wife had amazing experience on our tour with Hawaii Oceanic. They were super nice guys, very accommodating and experienced. We sighted multiple manta rays during our tour. Highly recommend these guys!

Manta Rays were amazing! Have to put it on your bucket lists. In the ocean after dark. Hanging Superman style on a surfboard. Light shining down from the bottom of the surf board and it sporadically releases plankton. Manta rays were huge, probably 4-5 feet long, 8-10 feet wing span. Not like Seaworld bat rays, these were HUGE. Came up to eat the plankton, doing barrel rolls inches from our faces. We could look right into their mouths and see out from their gills inside. So close. Such magnificent creatures. Wow. Totally amazing!

There are several tour boats out there that will take you on a tour with the manta rays but we decided to go with Hawaii Oceanic and I am glad we did. They didn't just plop us in the water and let us look. They actually took us on a snorkel swim around the area. We found a manta ray less than 5 minutes after getting in the water and followed it around for probably 30 minutes just admiring the beautiful creature. The whole time we could see all the other tour groups standing on their boats watching us. We snorkeled until sunset and then we were the first group to turn on the lights. Almost immediately after turning on the lights we had 6 manta rays underneath us coming from all directions. 2 of them were doing barrel rolls at the same time under our board. It was amazing. If you want to just hang on to the board then go with some other tour group but if you want to have a manta ray snorkeling experience then go with Hawaii Oceanic. It is more than a beginner snorkeling experience but it is the most amazing tour of manta rays that I have ever been on.
